Where and When…

The coronation of King Charles III and Queen Camilla is taking place on the morning of Saturday 6th May 2023 at Westminster Abbey, London.

Neighbours and communities across the United Kingdom are invited to share food and fun together at Coronation Big Lunches on Sunday 7th May 2023, in a nationwide act of celebration and friendship.

Check out the UK Gov website for organising a street party to make sure you do everything the right way.

If you are not able to arrange a road closure for a street party, you can still have an informal ‘street meet’ on a driveway, parking area, front garden, or end of a cul-de-sac that does not require permission from the council as it is on private land.

The Street Party and The Big Lunch websites have tons of ideas and advice.

Savoury King’s Coronation Food Ideas

Quiche

When Queen Elizabeth II was crowned, the official dish was Coronation Chicken. And there is absolutely no reason not to make a bowl of this curried chicken salad to serve in bread rolls and sandwiches. (It’s one of my favorite sandwich fillers!)

For the King’s Coronation, there is the official Coronation Quiche made with spinach, broad beans, and tarragon.

Quiche is a great food for street parties and buffets, as it can be eaten hot or cold with a green salad and boiled new potatoes or a classic potato salad.

Here are our egg-based dishes that taste good hot or cold:

Sandwiches, Rolls & Wraps

The staple of any British party is a platter of sandwiches! Or get a bit fancier with an assortment of rolls and wraps too.

Depending on your budget you can buy a platter from supermarkets. My go-to was always M&S, but I recently tried the service from Morissons and was very pleasantly surprised at the great quality.

Here are some sandwich recipes and filling ideas:

How To Prepare Sandwiches in Advance

If you want to prepare sandwiches in advance, you can do so by putting them together the night before and covering them loosely with parchment paper.

Then add a damp paper kitchen towel on top of the parchment paper and store the sandwiches in an airtight container in the fridge.

By following these steps, the sandwiches will remain fresh overnight and the bread won’t dry out. Be careful not to let the damp paper towel come into contact with the sandwiches, as this will cause the bread to become soggy – no one likes soggy sandwiches!

Savoury Pastries

Everyone loves a savoury pastry on a buffet, don’t they?

From sausage rolls which are actually really easy to make using ready-rolled pastry and sausagemeat (try different flavor sausage rolls) and cheese rolls for the plant-based eaters, to mini pork pies and savoury tartlets, there is always something for everyone!

Meat Dishes

Chicken wings and drumsticks are a mainstay of a British buffet, and can be flavoured in many different ways:

Cocktail sausages (on sticks of course), chicken satay, Coronation Chicken Skewers with Mango Dip (which I made for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee), mini meatballs, and chicken nuggets or goujons are other great options.

Salads

At the very minimum, I like I put out a simple green salad, a bowl of potato salad, and a bowl of coleslaw on a party food table, but pasta and rice salads are perfect choices too.

Here are some salads to make and serve:

Sweet King’s Coronation Food Ideas

There are so many delicious British desserts that you can put on a buffet table including an English Trifle, Bakewell Tart, or Union Flag Trifle (which I served for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee).

And many other sweet treats too! Here are some ideas and recipes to try:

Cocktails & Drinks

And finally, you can’t forget something to wash it all down with – whether that’s a pot of tea, a glass of orange squash, some fruit juice, or one of these cocktails (and mocktails!):

Other Street Party & Buffet Ideas

There are a few more ideas that didn’t fit into the categories!

  • Cheese & Pineapple on Sticks
  • Crudités (cucumber, carrot, etc) and Dips
  • Crisps, Tortilla Chips, Twiglets, Breadsticks – anything crunchy!
  • Nuts – be mindful of nut allergies though.
  • Mini Pizzas or Slices
  • Vol au Vents – so retro, but somehow they fit with a British buffet!
  • Cheese & Biscuits
  • Scotch Eggs
  • Olives
  • Gateaux, Cheesecake, Victoria Sponge
  • Mini cakes like Battenberg, French Fancies, Jam Tarts, etc.
  • Don’t forget plates, cutlery, napkins, and plastic glasses.
  • And for clearing up, you’ll need rubbish bags, paper towels, and cleaning spray.

However you are celebrating this historic British event, I hope that you have a great time and that the weather stays dry and sunny!

You can never quite rely on the British weather, so my top tip is to keep food portable so that should the weather change suddenly, you can dash inside – either the house or the car. Or put up some gazebos and you’re covered (literally!).
