Shrimp Slaw Sandwich
What is the difference between shrimp and prawns?
If you’re from the UK, you probably call shrimp, prawns; and if you’re from the US, you call them shrimp. I thought that was the difference – a UK v USA thing – but they’re actually different animals. I think most people would use them interchangeably and not realise there was a difference – and to be honest, to save confusion, I will continue to do so, but I found it fascinating to learn that they were not one and the same!
Shrimp and prawns can both be found in salt and freshwater. However, shrimp are found mostly in saltwater, and prawns are mostly found in freshwater – especially the ones we cook and eat. Shrimp are usually smaller than prawns but is not always an indicator of which is which. And they both taste the same – so essentially… it doesn’t matter!
Whether you call these sweet, succulent, seafood morsels shrimp or prawns – it doesn’t matter – cook ’em up and use them in this sandwich! I’ll be referring to them as shrimp in this recipe to save on any confusion!
Ingredients used in this recipe
Shrimp
So a shrimp sandwich is of course going to need shrimp. I find it easier to buy them ready peeled and de-veined so that I don’t have to bother doing it. If I’m pressed for time, then I’ll buy them ready cooked; but raw shrimp, cooked at home is always going to taste better in my opinion!
I’ve just been taking a look at an American supermarket online, and wow you guys have a lot of choice for the humble shrimp! Extra-small, large, jumbo, colossal… raw, cooked, tail on, shell on… I couldn’t even begin to tell you what size to buy!
Buy the size of shrimp you’re happy to put in your sandwich. If they’re too big, cut them up – simple!
Bread
This sandwich is made on a large loaf and then cut into pieces. You can use whatever kind of bread you like – French, Italian, wholewheat – whatever your favourite kind is! You could make this sandwich in small rolls, or even between two slices of bread.
Slaw Mix
In the name of convenience, buy a bag of slaw mix from the supermarket to use in this sandwich. Of course, if you want to chop up your own, please do so.
Garlic Lemon Aioli
Aioli or aïoli is a Mediterranean sauce made of garlic and olive oil; some regions use other emulsifiers such as egg. The names mean “garlic and oil” in Catalan and Provençal. It is found in the cuisines of the Mediterranean coasts of Spain, France, and Italy. – Wiki
We are cheating somewhat in this recipe by using ready-made mayo and adding lemon juice, salt, dijon mustard, and garlic powder
For my UK Readers: This recipe uses American cup measurements. Since I use this type of measurement often, I find it handy to have a set of measuring cups in the kitchen.

How do I make this shrimp slaw sandwich?
If you have raw shrimp, you need to cook it. You can fry it with a little olive oil and some garlic and lemon, or place under the grill/broiler and cook it that way. If you have cooked shrimp, then you’re ready to go.
Slice bread in half lengthways, and scoop out some of the doughy center to make space for the tasty filling.
To make the aioli, mix mayonnaise with lemon juice, salt, Dijon mustard and garlic powder until combined. Spread some of the aioli onto the bread, then pour the rest over the slaw and toss to combine everything.
Now all you need to do is assemble the sandwich – spread a layer of slaw onto one half of the bread and then pile on the shrimp. Top with the other half and cut into slices. Enjoy!
