Ingredients & Equipment Used In This Recipe

While most ingredients can be bought in grocery stores, for your convenience, any specialized or notable ingredients and equipment needed for this recipe have been linked to Amazon or other stores if available online. Staple ingredients such as oil, salt, sugar, etc., aren’t always included here as you’re likely to have those in your kitchen. The complete list of ALL ingredients with measurements is found on the recipe card.

Recipes on The Purple Pumpkin Blog use both cup measurements and/or weighted measurements. American cups and kitchen food scales are handy pieces of equipment to have in your kitchen as it means you’ll be able to make all of the different recipes on my blog. I try to give American, imperial, and metric measurements in my recipes. Please note, that you can mix cup measurements with weighted measurements, but never mix imperial (pounds, ounces, pints, etc.,) with metric (kilograms, grams, litres, etc.,).

This crowd-pleasing Chocolate Chip Skillet Cookie Recipe for Halloween comes complete with frosting spiders and web!!

Ingredients

For the Skillet Cookie

  • 1¾ cup rolled oats
  • 1½ cup all-purpose flour (plain flour)
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • ¾ tsp baking soda (bicarbonate of soda)
  • ¼ tsp kosher salt
  • ¾ cup canola oil
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup chocolate chips
  • ½ cup caramel sauce
  • ½ cup chocolate sauce

For the Frosting

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 cups powdered sugar (icing sugar)
  • 4 Tbsp heavy whipping cream (double cream)
  • Black Food Coloring Gel

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F/180°C/Gas 4. Spray a 8-inch cast-iron skillet with nonstick baking spray.

  4. Place skillet into the preheated oven and bake for 20-30 minutes until light golden brown.
  5. Set aside to cool completely before decorating.
  6. Drizzle the caramel and chocolate sauce on top of the cooked and cooled cookie.
  7. To make the frosting, use an electric handheld or standing mixer, and beat the butter, powdered sugar, heavy whipping cream, and vanilla until combined, smooth, and can hold stiff peaks.
  8. Divide the frosting into two bowls.
  9. Mix a few drops of black food coloring to one of the bowls of frosting and mix to reach the desired shade. Making black can be tricky, to overcome this, if suitable I add a spoonful of dark cocoa powder to the frosting mix to help darken it.
  10. Place the black frosting in a piping bag, and the white frosting into another piping bag. Cut off the tips of the piping bags.
  11. Using the black frosting, pipe a large vertical cross (+) and a diagonal cross (X) across the cooked and cooled cookie.
  12. Pipe half circles between each line segment to finish the web detail.
  13. Use the white frosting to highlight the web.
  14. Using the black frosting, pipe out some spiders to go on the web - pipe a large circle and a small circle, and pipe 8 legs on each side as shown.
  15. Cut into slices to serve. Enjoy and Happy Halloween!
