Chocolate Charcuterie Board

The whole ingredients list and instructions are in the printable recipe card at the end of this post. I highly recommend reading the blog post all the way through so that you don’t miss any tips or substitution suggestions, to ensure that you have all the ingredients and equipment required and understand the steps and timings involved.

The very definition of charcuterie is the culinary art of preparing meat products, which dates back to the 15th century, and so, a classic charcuterie board typically features cured meats and other delicacies.

However, modern-day charcuterie boards can be laden with all kinds of foods – from traditional meats and cheese to themed boards for the holidays, and like our chocolate charcuterie board, desserts!

So if you are you looking for a unique and delicious way to entertain your guests this holiday season, setting up your desserts on a sharing board is a great option!

Charcuterie boards look like they are difficult to set up, but they are actually pretty easy.

They can be as fancy or as simple as you desire, and this grazing board filled with chocolate desserts and sweet treats for the holidays is sure to be a hit with both kids and adults alike!

A Chocolate Dessert Board Idea for the Holidays

Ingredients Needed For A Chocolate Charcuterie Board

The hardest aspect of creating any charcuterie board is going to be deciding what goes on it; the rest is fairly easy! I ADORE creating them for parties.

This charcuterie board “recipe” is really just a guide on how to set up a board of delicious chocolate desserts to serve at your next Christmas gathering.

The items listed below are used in the board featured in this post.

But if you can’t source a particular element, don’t like something, or want to switch to something else – go for it!

Chocolate Desserts

TIP! The holidays are busy for everyone so sometimes grabbing ready-made something is often the easiest option. But you can totally make items to go on your dessert board – even if it’s using a box of cake mix!

Extra Treats

TIP! Can’t find the exact chocolate desserts and sweet treats we used? Don’t worry – use whatever products are available to you. That’s the beauty of any type of charcuterie board!

Fruit

  • Strawberriescut in half through the leaves and stem for a pretty presentation.
  • Blueberries
  • Raspberries

TIP! Ensure that you use fresh fruit rather than frozen which will end up being mushy on your board.

More Chocolate Ideas For Your Sharing Platter:

  • Chocolate Covered Pretzels I made these a long time ago on my blog, but they are so easy to make.
  • Candy Cane Chocolate Fudgeany kind of chocolate fudge would be great, but this recipe makes use of candy canes which are also on this board.
  • Candy Cane Chocolate Trufflesditto on the above, but replace fudge with truffles.
  • Marshmallows – whether you have plain white ones (perfect for dunking), shaped ones, Peeps, or even these S’mores Marshmallows. You make Chocolate Covered Marshmallows (which I did for one of my son’s birthdays).
  • Chocolate-covered fruit and nuts – like raisins, cranberries, Brazil nuts, and peanuts.
  • Wafers – rolled wafers, wafer cookies, or stroopwafels
  • Seasonal Chocolates – of course, that will be dependent on where you live in the world, but some British favourites include After Eights, Ferrero Rocher, Matchmakers, and Terry’s Chocolate Orange. And in the USA, Hershey’s Kisses.
  • Whipped cream would be another great dip, as would Biscoff spread (so, so good!)

Equipment Needed Chocolate Charcuterie Boards

  • Wooden Board – or a platter to place all of the charcuterie elements on. The one you see in these photos is 9″ x 13″, but you can use one you have to hand and adjust to the items to fit.
  • Small Bowl – to serve the condiments in. You could also use a ramekin.
  • Sharp Knife
  • Chopping/Cutting Board – to cut and prepare the food.
  • Small Plates – for guests to eat from. This might be ceramic plates, or paper plates, which will depend on your event.
  • Charcuterie Utensils – tongs, spoons, etc. You will need them for guests to pick up foods from the charcuterie board, and possibly utensils to eat with.

Recipes on The Purple Pumpkin Blog use both cup measurements and/or weighted measurements. American cups and kitchen food scales are handy pieces of equipment to have in your kitchen as it means you’ll be able to make all of the different recipes on my blog. I try to give American, imperial, and metric measurements in my recipes. Please note, that you can mix cup measurements with weighted measures, but never mix imperial (pounds, ounces, pints, etc.,) with metric (kilograms, grams, liters, etc.,).

How To Make A Christmas Chocolate Dessert Board

What is the Best Board To Use for Charcuterie?

It’s a common misconception that a charcuterie board must be displayed on a wooden board.

But you can use slate, marble, ceramic, and glass, and even line a counter or table with parchment paper and lay everything out direct. (Very popular on TikTok!)

Take a look at your trays and platters – I’m sure there are plenty you could use.

There are really no hard and fast rules – use what you have, or invest in a good quality non-porous hardwood or bamboo board to use for charcuterie.

Hardwoods such as olive, black walnut, teak, and acacia are best.

Softwoods like oak or ash are not good to use as a charcuterie as they’re too porous and the oils and aromas will leak into the wood.

No matter what shape it is – square, rectangle, round, or otherwise – reserve the board you’ll use to serve your desserts solely for that use. Don’t chop food on it as well.

How Do I Make Chocolate Charcuterie Board?

The printable recipe card has the full ingredients list and instructions and can be found at the end of this post.

This charcuterie board is an assembly job rather than a recipe as all the items are bought ready-made.

But if you are making some of the items for your chocolate board, make sure you allow enough time for that. Most baked goods can be made the day before.

We used a large, round wooden board, but you may use any size and shape you have available, you will need to adjust the placement of items to fit.

Step 1: Place the brownies, stacked on their sides in a wavy ‘S’ shape across the board. This is the guideline for the placement of the rest of the chocolate charcuterie items.

Step 2: Place two small bowls or ramekins at the apex of the S-shaped line of brownies. You can fill them with the two dipping sauces now, or when you are ready to serve.

Using the photo below as a guide for placement, make a line of stacked Oreos (one white chocolate, and the other chocolate fudge) leading out from the brownies.

Place three cookies on the bottom row, followed by two cookies, and then finally one on the top.

From here on, it is a rough placement guide, as it will depend on the size and shape of the elements that you have for your board!

CHARCUTERIE PLACEMENT TIPS!

  • Arrange items in uniform patterns on the board.
  • Group the same items together.
  • Try to keep similar colors separate if possible.
  • Fill in all available space.

Step 3: Snap your chocolate bar into strips and stack them next to the brownies. Pile the chocolate bark next to one of the bowls.

Add a stack of mint chocolates next to the brownies in the curve of the ‘S’ and by the chocolate fudge Oreos.

Fill in the gap between the Oreos and one of the bowls with white chocolate balls, and on the other side, pile in some of the mini truffles on the opposite side.

Step 4: Stack some peppermint sticks next to the white chocolate Oreos on one side, and add a pile of M&M’s on the other.

Fill in the space between the brownies and the chocolate bark with some chocolate-covered pretzels.

Step 5: Place some mini cupcakes next to the brownies on the side of the chocolate fudge Oreos, and add some on the opposite side too.

Add a pile of mini cookies next to the peppermint sticks (you can see a few large chocolate chips thrown in too just to fill in the gap!)

Fill in the remaining spaces with blueberries, raspberries, and strawberries.

Tuck in a few packages of peppermint bark, and decorate with a mini candy cane heart (just place two candy canes opposite each other at an angle).

Pour dipping sauces into the bowls if you haven’t done so already – serve and enjoy!
