How To Make A Snowball

I’ve often mentioned that I grew up living in a pub, and when I was old enough I worked behind the bar. This time of year, is when the orders for Snowballs would come through from the restaurant, and my dad taught me how to make this classic Christmas cocktail. When it comes to my bar tending skills, I learned from the best! The bar was my domain, and I do miss it from time to time!

I was sent a bottle of Warninks Advocaat – which is synonymous with the infamous Snowball cocktail – and I’m looking forward to a few cheeky cocktails this Christmas! The iconic bottle filled is filled with a custard yellow liqueur made with eggs, sugar and brandy.

Advocaat is a traditional Dutch beverage, and is the Dutch word for “lawyer”. It is short for advocatenborrel, or “lawyer’s drink”, where borrel is Dutch for a small alcoholic beverage consumed slowly during a social gathering. According to the 1882 edition of the Dictionary of the Dutch Language, advocatenborrel was “so named as a good lubricant for the throat, and thus considered especially useful for a lawyer, who must speak in public.” – Thank you Wikipedia!

You don’t need any special cocktail making equipment to make a snowball, just a glass! If you have a cocktail shaker you can shake the advocaat and lime, but personally, I just stir. And honestly, for me, a Snowball isn’t a Snowball without a maraschino cherry on a stick! You could add a wedge of lime too.

Why not try these other cocktails made using advocaat…

Bombardino

Makes one drink
Ingredients
• 1 part brandy
• 1 part advocaat
• whipped cream
• ground cinnamon

Method
1. Pour the brandy into a glass mug.
2. Warm the advocaat in a small saucepan until hot, but not boiling.
3. Slowly add to the brandy, stirring to combine well.
4. Top with a generous dollop of whipped cream, and sprinkle with ground cinnamon.

Bombardino is a drink popular in Italy during the Winter, especially in the ski resorts. Its translations is “the bomb”!
You can make a variations of this cocktail: replace the brandy with rum to make a Pirata; replace the brandy with whisky to make a Scozzese; add 1 part espresso to the original recipe to make a Calimero.

If you are in London, you could pay a visit to Original Sin in Stoke Newington where they are serving a Snowball Flight for £14. Each drink is Christmas in a glass!

The Snowflake features Warninks mixed with gin, maraschino liqueur, and topped with cava and lemon juice. This sparkling cocktail is a lighter rendition of the classic and an ideal contender for pre-dinner tipples or New Year’s cheers.

Up next is the Garland made using Warninks, amontillado sherry, spiced rum, topped with ginger ale and garnished with candied ginger. Advocaat, along with notes of raisin and nut from the rum and the sherry, creates a Christmas pudding flavour with added ginger ale for that underlying spice – it’s Christmas cake in a glass.

Finally, warm those cockles with something hot. Enjoy the Saint Nick, a delicious blend of Warninks, Calvados, triple sec, fresh lemon juice, topped with mulled Breton cider, a Christmas cinnamon rim and garnished with a zesty orange disc. A collision of two classic wintery drinks; the Saint Nick is the classic Snowball meets mulled cider, sure to be this year’s go-to toasty tipple.
