What is VE Day?

VE Day, or Victory in Europe Day, is when Germany’s unconditional surrender was announced, bringing World War II in Europe to an end.

On May 8, 1945, streets across Britain were filled with cheering crowds, Union Jack flags, and joyous celebrations, and people gathered to embrace the long-awaited peace.

Now, in 2025, the 80th anniversary will be observed with national events, street parties, and memorial services, ensuring the memories and stories of the past continue to be shared with future generations.

VE Day 80

The official VE Day 80th anniversary website outlines several commemorative events planned for May 8, 2025:

On Thursday 8th May 2025 we are encouraging the lighting of Beacons and Lamp Lights of Peace at 9.30pm, the raising of a unique VE Day flag at 9am and, where possible, holding parties of celebration throughout the day in the streets, gardens at home, churches, villages, town halls, pubs, clubs, hotels and all manner of locations throughout the United Kingdom, Channel Islands, Isle of Man and UK Overseas Territories.
