Christmas Side Dishes

I’ll put my hand up and say I am guilty of cooking pretty much the same meal for Christmas Day year-in-year-out. I guess because it’s pretty much the only time we eat roast turkey, that it just feels easy to stick with traditional sides.

However, there are so many great Christmas side dishes to be made – as I discovered when I rounded up this awesome list of recipes – which includes potato, and vegetables, as well as sauces, gravy, bread rolls, salads (great for cold cuts!), and several others that are a bit more unusual, but sounded so good I had to include them!

Create Christmas was born in 2012, and is now in its 7th year! I share as many festive ideas as I can – my vision for this blog is to think up the ideas so that you don’t have to!

You can read more from Create Christmas 2018 here.

As with all of my roundups, there are ideas from my blog as well as from lots of fab blogs from around the world. I have made all of links to these Christmas side dishes open in a new window so that you don’t lose your place on the list.

I have split the list into sections making it easy for you to look through the various recipes, the list corresponds with the photo above – so that you can get an idea what the finished dish should look like. Enjoy!

Christmas Stuffings & Dressings

Stuffings & Dressings

Stuffing seems to be quite different in the UK and USA. As a Brit, I’ve always known stuffing to usually be made with sausage meat (or sage and onion stuffing out of a box!); but in the US, stuffing seems to have corn bread as a base. Stuffing and Dressing seems to be interchangeable in some ways – they might both be made of the same thing, but stuffing goes inside the bird, and dressing gets served on the side. I rarely stuff the turkey with actual stuffing, but still call it stuffing. Confused? Don’t be! These recipes below fall into the stuffing/dressing category!

  1. Mexican Chorizo Stuffing with Poblano Peppers – Went There 8 This

Fruit Salads/Ambrosia for ChristmasFruit Salads/Ambrosia

Okay, so as a Brit, fruit salads – or ambrosia as they appear to be called too – are lost on me! But they are listed as a festive side on American food blogs, and I wanted to include them.

I’m pretty sure they must be eaten as a dessert, rather that sitting on your plate next to a slice of turkey and some roasted potatoes…? If any of my American readers clue me in, that would be awesome!

I found this article about how ambrosia became a Southern Christmas tradition, which goes into the history of the dish – worth a read if you like food history!
