Yarn Wrapped Heart
The full list of materials, tools, and instructions is in the printable tutorial card at the end of this post. I highly recommend reading the blog post all the way through before starting this project to ensure that you have everything required and understand the steps and timings involved.
There are two parts to this craft – the yarn wrapped heart, and the craft stick sign to display the heart.
Both parts are pretty straightforward to do, and while I think this craft idea is more suited to teens and adults, I think tweens and slightly younger children could have a go, (but maybe with a little help).
I made some yarn-wrapped letters for Halloween many years ago, and it was such a fun task!
The same method of wrapping yarn around a shape is used here – the shape being a simple heart cut from cardboard.
You can wrap the heart with any color you like – we stuck to red and pink for Valentine’s Day, but purple and black would look awesome for anti-Valentine’s Day decor!
Read on for the materials and tools list and how to make this pretty heart sign…

How Do I Make A Yarn Wrapped Heart Sign?
The printable tutorial card with the full supplies list and instructions can be found at the end of this post.
Step 1 – Assemble Wooden Sign: To create the wooden sign, line up seven craft sticks on your work surface. Attach a craft stick to the top and bottom with a glue gun and glue sticks.
TIP! You can use liquid craft glue if you prefer for this project, but you will have to wait for it to dry.
Step 2 – Paint Sign: Basecoat the sign with watered-down dark brown paint.
Paint quickly and then remove the excess paint with a paper towel. This will give the craft sticks a stained appearance.
TIP! You can also use washable markers, crayons, or even colored pencils to color the jumbo craft sticks if you prefer.
Step 3 – Attach Twine: Measure and cut a 12″/30cm length of natural jute twine with scissors.
Flip the sign over and attach the ends of the twine to the top right and left-hand sides with a glue gun and glue sticks.
Step 4 – Make Cardboard Heart: Download, print, and cut out the heart template.
Trace the heart onto a scrap of corrugated cardboard with a pencil or marker, then carefully cut out the heart with scissors.
Step 5 – Attach Yarn to Heart: Tie the ends of the yarn together in a knot and attach it to the center of the cardboard heart with a glue gun and glue sticks.
Step 6 – Wrap Heart: Start wrapping both strands of yarn around the cardboard heart in a random fashion.
Continue wrapping and securing every fifth or sixth wrap with a small dot of glue.
Keep on wrapping the yarn around the heart in a haphazard manner until you can no longer see any cardboard.
Tie the two ends of the yarn together in a knot and attach it to the back of the cardboard heart with a glue gun and glue sticks.
TIP! Even though you are wrapping the heart in a random manner, try to keep it even so you don’t end up with a lumpy heart!
Step 7 – Attach Heart: Use the glue gun and glue sticks to attach the yarn-wrapped heart to the craft stick sign. Press down firmly in the center of the heart to make sure that adheres well.
Step 8 – Add Ribbon Bow: Cut a length of ribbon and tie it into a bow. Cut a notch from the ends of the ribbon tails to prevent fraying. Attach to the top left of the sign with a glue gun and glue sticks.
Ensure all glue has dried before hanging your yarn-wrapped heart sign where desired!
