St. Patrick's Day Puppets: A set of five paper puppets made using popsicle sticks. They are a leprechaun, pot of gold, rainbow, horseshoe and a shamrock. Laid flat on a pink background. Same image throughout at different angles and with different text overlay, unless otherwise described.

St. Patrick’s Day Puppets

Popsicle stick puppets are a quick, fun, and easy craft for all ages! Not only are they fun to make, but they are also fun to play with and encourage imaginative play in children.

This is a fun activity for after school, on the weekend, for a play-date or even as a bonding activity with grandparents or other family members.

Younger children will need some help with cutting the pieces out, but older children should manage just fine (although you know your child better than I do, so best judge their abilities).

I’ve suggested various paper colors that you can use to make these puppets, but you can use whatever colors you like. And you don’t have to stick to just five puppets either – use the template several times and make lots of leprechauns!

When the puppets have been made, use them to tell stories or sing songs about St. Patrick’s Day!

Included in the printable template (which you’ll find just before the how-to tutorial card at the end of this post) are some St. Patrick’s Day/Irish poems that I’m sure will come in very handy!

  6. To make the rainbow, stick each layer directly to the popsicle stick and attach the clouds at either end.
  7. To make the pot of gold, cut the coins in half and place them towards the top of the pot, and attach the pot to a popsicle stick as in step 5.
  8. To make the shamrock and horseshoe simply attach them to a popsicle stick as in step 5. Add detail with a marker if you wish.
  9. There is also a lucky coin that isn't demonstrated in the photographs. Cut the round piece and the shamrock piece from different shades of yellow paper, stick them together and attach them to a popsicle stick as in step 5.
