These St. Patrick’s Day Puppets are simple and fun to make! Using a free printable template, some construction paper and popsicle sticks you can make a set of five puppets including a leprechaun, pot of gold, rainbow, horseshoe, and shamrock!

St. Patrick's Day Puppets: A set of five paper puppets made using popsicle sticks. They are a leprechaun, pot of gold, rainbow, horseshoe and a shamrock. Laid flat on a pink background. Same image throughout at different angles and with different text overlay, unless otherwise described.

St. Patrick’s Day Puppets

Popsicle stick puppets are a quick, fun, and easy craft for all ages! Not only are they fun to make, but they are also fun to play with and encourage imaginative play in children.

This is a fun activity for after school, on the weekend, for a play-date or even as a bonding activity with grandparents or other family members.

Younger children will need some help with cutting the pieces out, but older children should manage just fine (although you know your child better than I do, so best judge their abilities).

I’ve suggested various paper colors that you can use to make these puppets, but you can use whatever colors you like. And you don’t have to stick to just five puppets either – use the template several times and make lots of leprechauns!

When the puppets have been made, use them to tell stories or sing songs about St. Patrick’s Day!

Included in the printable template (which you’ll find just before the how-to tutorial card at the end of this post) are some St. Patrick’s Day/Irish poems that I’m sure will come in very handy!

    Cut Paper Leprechaun Puppet Pieces
  • Using a glue stick, attach the hatband and buckle to the hat; the beard to the small round piece, and the boots on each of the long strips.

    Leprechaun Puppet Assembly
  • Stick the head to the top of the big round piece and attach the legs to the bottom.

    Leprechaun Puppet Assembly
  • Use marker pens to draw eyes, nose, and mouth onto the leprechaun's face, and add some stripes to the socks too if you like.

    Drawing features onto puppet
  • Use a blob of white school glue to stick the finished paper leprechaun to the end of a popsicle stick and leave it to dry.

    Completed Leprechaun Puppet
  • To make the rainbow, stick each layer directly to the popsicle stick and attach the clouds at either end.
  • To make the pot of gold, cut the coins in half and place them towards the top of the pot, and attach the pot to a popsicle stick as in step 5.
  • To make the shamrock and horseshoe simply attach them to a popsicle stick as in step 5. Add detail with a marker if you wish.
  • There is also a lucky coin that isn't demonstrated in the photographs. Cut the round piece and the shamrock piece from different shades of yellow paper, stick them together and attach them to a popsicle stick as in step 5.
