Ingredients Needed For Hummus and Vegetable Grazing Board
This grazing board “recipe” is really just a guide on how to set up a board of delicacies to serve at your next gathering.
The items listed below are used in the board featured in this post.
But if you can’t source a particular element, don’t like something, or want to switch to something else – you totally can.
Hummus
You will need four different types of hummus to set up this snack board. Buy your favorite flavors ready-made, or make your own.
Crackers & Bread
- Whole Wheat Crackers
- Naan Bread
- Pita Crackers
- Sea Salt Crackers
Or any type of crackers that you like!
Vegetables
- Celery
- Bell Peppers – Red, Orange, and Yellow
- Baby Tomatoes – you can use whatever type of baby tomato you like – cherry, grape, or baby plum. You could even use different colored tomatoes if available, but I think the red ones lend to the festiveness of the charcuterie board.
- Broccoli
- Cauliflower
- Asparagus
- Baby Carrots
- Cucumber
- Brussels Sprouts
- Olives – use your favorite kind of olive. Use whole olives – pitted or unpitted, stuffed or unstuffed – your choice.
- Green Olives – often stuffed with pimentos, garlic, or lemon rind.
- Kalamata Olives – a very popular Greek olive.
- Black Olives – includes Kalamata, but other tasty varieties are Niçoise, Mission, and Amfissa.
- Lemon – for garnish
Other Items
- Cheese – use cubes of any cheese you like such as Cheddar, Colby Jack, Feta,
- Fig Jam – buy it ready-made or try our Fig Jam Recipe

Equipment Needed For This Recipe
- Wooden Board – or a platter to place all of the elements on.
- Small Bowls – to serve the hummus in. You could also use a ramekin.
- Sharp Knife
- Chopping/Cutting Board – to cut and prepare the food.
- Small Plates – for guests to eat from. This might be ceramic plates, or paper plates, which will depend on your event.
- Charcuterie Utensils – knives, tongs, spoons, etc. You will need them for guests to pick up foods from the charcuterie board, as well as utensils to eat with.
Recipes on The Purple Pumpkin Blog use cups and/or weighted measurements. American cups and kitchen food scales are handy pieces of equipment to have in your kitchen as it means you’ll be able to make all of the different recipes on my blog. I try to give American US customary, imperial, and metric measurements in my recipes. Please note, that you can mix cup measurements with weighted measures, but never mix US customary/imperial (pounds, ounces, pints, etc.,) with metric (kilograms, grams, liters, etc.,).
What is the Best Board To Use for Charcuterie?
It’s a common misconception that a charcuterie board must be displayed on a wooden board.
But you can use slate, marble, ceramic, and glass, and even line a counter or table with parchment paper and lay everything out direct. (Very popular on TikTok!)
Take a look at your trays and platters – I’m sure there are plenty you could use.
There are really no hard and fast rules – use what you have, or invest in a good quality non-porous hardwood or bamboo board to use for charcuterie.
Hardwoods such as olive, black walnut, teak, and acacia are best.
Softwoods like oak or ash are not good to use as a charcuterie as they’re too porous and the oils and aromas will leak into the wood.
No matter what shape it is – square, rectangle, round, or otherwise – reserve the board you’ll use to serve cheese and meats solely for that use. Don’t chop food on it as well.
How Do I Set Up A Hummus & Veggie Grazing Board?
The printable recipe card with the full ingredients list and instructions can be found at the end of this post.
Step 1 – Fill Bowls: Transfer the hummus and fig jam into small bowls and place them on your board. You can add garnish to the hummus such as olive oil, fresh herbs, nuts, etc.
Step 2 – Add Crackers: Create towers of crackers, then lay them down around the edges of the board, so that they stack neatly in a row.
Step 3 – Prepare Vegetables: Clean, peel, deseed, and cut vegetables as required. Cut bell peppers and celery into batons, slice cucumbers into rounds, break the cauliflower and broccoli into small florets, snap the tough end from the asparagus (gently bend the spears and it will naturally break at the tough point), and slice Brussels sprouts in half.
Step 4 – Add Vegetables: Create clusters and piles of the prepared vegetables in and around the bowls and crackers on the board.
Step 5 – Garnish & Serve: Finish the board by adding cubes of cheese, olives, lemon wedges, and other garnish such as fresh herbs if desired. Add serving tongs and spoons, serve, and enjoy!
Charcuterie Placement Tips
- Start with placing bowls (for sauces, and smaller foods) on your board and build around them.
- Place larger and medium-sized foods onto the board first, and consider placing them towards the edges for structure.
- In photography and design, odd numbers work best, as does an ‘S’ shape. Place your items with this in mind to help please and lead the eyes around the board.
- Arrange items in uniform patterns on the board.
- Fill in all available space – abundance looks the best when it comes to charcuterie boards. (A minimal approach can also work, experiment with your own aesthetic!)
- Group the same items together, but also spread them out on the board, for example, if your board feeds 16 people, group the items together in different areas.
- Try to keep similar colors separate if possible, and break up pale-colored foods with bright ones, like fruits, for example.
- Don’t forget the garnish for both the board and the surrounding area. Use linens, flowers, herbs, and other decorations to elevate the beauty of your charcuterie board.
