Cocktail Ingredients

The ingredients and tools for this recipe are conveniently linked to online retailers, including Amazon, Amazon Fresh, Instacart, and Walmart. The quantities are in the recipe card.

  • Fireball—A cinnamon-flavored whiskey.
  • Bourbon—Use your favorite brand.
  • Cranberry Juice—Use 100% cranberry juice for a bold red color and tart flavor, or cranberry juice drink for a sweeter taste. Avoid blends with other fruits so the drink keeps its signature hue.
  • SpriteOr other lemon-lime carbonated beverage.
  • Silver Edible Luster Dust —This powder adds a shimmering effect to drinks.
  • Simple SyrupStore-bought is fine, or make your own: Combine equal parts sugar and water in a pan over medium heat. Stir until the sugar dissolves completely. Cool, then use as needed in cocktails. Store in a sealed jar in the fridge for up to one week.
  • Garnish: Halloween Sprinkles, Lime Slices

Cocktail Equipment

  • Cocktail Shaker—If you don’t have one, use a jar with a tight-fitting lid to shake your drink.
  • Cocktail Jigger—For measuring your liquors, syrups, and juices.
  • Highball Glass—Or any kind of cocktail 8-oz glass you have.

Cocktail Variations

Here are some variations of the original cocktail recipe you might like to try:

  • Go Dark & Stormy: Swap bourbon for dark rum (the “red-rum” pun still works!) and add a splash of ginger beer instead of Sprite for a fiery twist.
  • Bloody Cherry Redrum: Replace cranberry juice with cherry juice and add a drizzle of grenadine for a deeper, blood-red color and sweeter bite.
  • Smoky Redrum: Use smoky Scotch whisky or a smoky bourbon to give the drink an eerie, haunted-house edge.
  • Apple Spice Redrum: Mix in 1 ounce (30 ml) apple cider or apple juice and a dash of cinnamon syrup for an autumnal twist.
  • Sparkling Redrum: Top up the cocktail with Prosecco or sparkling rosé instead of soda for a fizzy Halloween party version.
  • Frozen Redrum Cocktail: Blend all the ingredients with crushed ice to create a slushy, frozen version. You can do the same with the mocktail, too.

The Shining Movie Mocktail (Non-Alcoholic)

Make this mocktail version of this movie cocktail without the alcohol—perfect for young adults, older teens, or anyone skipping the booze.

Garnish a glass with Halloween sprinkles, as in the recipe card, and fill it with ice. Shake 1 teaspoon silver shimmer dust, 3 ounces (90 ml) cranberry juice, 1 ounce (30 ml) apple juice, 1 ounce (30 ml) lemon-lime soda, and ½ ounce (15 ml) cinnamon syrup in a cocktail shaker, and pour into the prepared glass. (Makes 1 drink)

Virgin Redrum Cocktail with Non-Alcoholic Spirits

For adults who would still like to enjoy the taste of alcohol in their mocktail, you could try non-alcoholic alternatives such as Lyres (UK and USA), Strykk (UK), and Ritual (US & Canada).

Follow the recipe card using the non-alcoholic alternatives listed above instead of the alcoholic ones.

What Does “1 Part” Mean?

It’s an easy way to scale cocktail recipes up or down. Simply choose any measuring container—such as a shot glass, cup, or jug—and use it for each ingredient. As long as the ratios stay the same, the quantities will remain balanced.

So whether you’re making one drink or a big batch, the recipe always works!

Big Batch of The Shining Redrum

Make a large batch of The Shining Redrum Cocktail for parties using the “1 part” system to scale up! (See note above.)

  • 1 part Fireball Whiskey
  • 1 part Bourbon
  • 3 parts Cranberry Juice
  • 1 part Lemon-Lime Soda
  • Add enough luster dust to achieve the desired shimmering effect.

Serve in drinks dispensers or pitchers, or go retro and serve from a punch bowl. Add plenty of ice to your serving container to keep the cocktail chilled.

Saving Leftovers

While it’s best to enjoy the cocktail fresh to savor its flavors, you may have some left at the end of your party—don’t let it go to waste!

  • Transfer it to an airtight pitcher or container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Or, to make it last longer, turn it into Redrum Granita!
  • Granita is a semi-frozen dessert made from sugar, water, and various flavorings. Originally from Sicily.
  • Transfer the cocktail to a shallow freezer-safe container and freeze it for 6 hours (or overnight). If desired, add some simple syrup or another sweetener.
  • Use a fork to break the frozen cocktail into small pieces. Serve and enjoy!
  • Or pour the mixture into ice cube trays and freeze. Use the cocktail cubes to chill and flavor future cocktails without diluting the drink.
