We made soda bread for our St. Patrick’s Dinner Party – hubby wanted to have a go at making this and I was happy to let him…oh my…this bread is so easy to make! There isn’t any yeast in soda bread, so no need to wait for the dough to rise, and then knock it back, and rise again, and knead till your arms are sore…simply mix the ingredients together, bring to a dough, shape and bake…simples!
Depending on how bread greedy you are, one of these loaves would feed 4 – 6 people. We are bread greedy and went through 2 between 6 of us…
The crust of this bread goes really crusty, and you may panic thinking that the inside is going to be dry and horrible…but it’s soft (if a little dense) and moreish…and best served warm with proper butter!
- 150g wholemeal flour
- 150g plain flour
- 1tsp bicarbonate of soda
- ½tsp salt
- 250ml buttermilk
- Heat the oven to 200C/180C fan/Gas 6
- Sieve the flours, bicarbonate of soda and salt into a mixing bowl. Tip the remaining wholemeal husks left in the sieve into the bowl as well.
- Add the buttermilk and combine until everything comes to a dough.
- Knead lightly, then shape into a ball.
- Slash a cross on the top of the bread with a knife and place onto a floured baking sheet.
- Bake for 30 to 40 minutes until golden and it sounds hollow when you tap the bottom of the bread.
I wouldn’t hesitate to make this bread again! I have heard you can make soda bread with natural or Greek yoghurt, or with soured milk. I will investigate, try it out and get back to you!
Even if you have never made bread before, please try this one – it is so quick, so easy and so tasty! And you won’t be disappointed – I promise! My husband has never made bread before, and this recipe came out wonderfully!
