Watermelon Lime Spritzer
In my part of the world – the UK – we are currently experiencing a heatwave. Temperatures are set to get as high as 100F, which is insane, because I don’t think I’ve ever known it to be that hot here!
All this heat requires something refreshing to drink, and this watermelon lime spritzer is it!
What is a spritzer?
A spritzer is simply made with white wine and soda or sparkling mineral water. It’s a great way to turn a glass of wine into a longer drink.
On another note, a wine cooler is a beverage made with wine and fruit juice.
I guess this wine cocktail could be described as either of the above, but I went with spritzer, because I like that word!

Ingredients used in this cocktail
Just four ingredients are used in this fruity and refreshing cocktail:
- white wine
- club soda
Use your favourite white wine in this cocktail – whether that is a dry chardonnay, a medium-dry sauvignon blanc, or a sweet moscato – it’s all good!
Or why not use a sparkling wine like prosecco, cava, or even champagne to turn it into a melon mimosa? (Just leave out the soda!)
I nearly forgot ice – is that even an ingredient though? You’ll need ice to cool this drink down!
Oh, and one more optional change. If you’re not a fan of soda water, you could use sparkling mineral water, or even lemonade (that’s lemon-lime soda/Sprite/7-Up to my overseas readers, rather than the soft drink made with fresh lemons!)
Equipment used in this recipe
The watermelon in this spritzer is muddled before adding the rest of the ingredients. So you will need a muddler – which is a fancy, cocktail maker’s tool to mash (muddle) fruit, herbs, and spices in the bottom of a glass.
However, if you have a pestle and mortar, you can use the pestle, as that is essentially the same thing. Or you could just use the end of a small rolling pin.
If you are going to be making this cocktail in large quantities, I recommend whizzing the watermelon up in a blender as it will save time.

How do I make a watermelon lime spritzer?
This is such a simple recipe – muddle the watermelon in the bottom of a glass, then add ice, and slices of lime. Top up with white wine and soda, and that. Is. IT!
If you want to make this as a large batch cocktail, simply blitz the watermelon in a blender or smoothie maker as it’ll be easier to do this than squashing a bunch of fruit with a muddling tool! Then add the melon, ice, lime white wine, and soda to a drinks dispenser or punch bowl and you’re good to go!
You can add sweetness to this drink with simple syrup.
How to make simple syrup
Place equal measures of sugar and water in a pan, and stir over medium heat. By the time it starts to simmer, the sugar is dissolved, and that’s it! Leave to cool before use.

Virgin Watermelon Lime Spritzer Mocktail
If you would like to make this beverage without the alcohol, simply top up with club soda, or replace the soda with Sprite, 7-Up, or other lemon-lime soda – in the UK we call it [fizzy] lemonade.
You could also use low alcohol, or no-alcohol wines if you still want the flavour for adults, but without the alcoholic content.
