Hocus Pocus Cocktail

If you love the movie Hocus Pocus (and as of September 30, 2022, Hocus Pocus 2) and are thinking about having a party themed after the Sanderson Sisters, then you simply HAVE to make this Hocus Pocus Potion!

(I’ve got another cocktail you’ll love too – Sanderson Sisters Cocktail (Amok Amok Amok!) With Apple Brandy)

The cocktail potion turns green thanks to mixing pineapple juice with Blue Curaçao, but you could always amp up the color with some green food coloring too.

The rim of the glass is decorated with black cake gel in a dripping pattern – covering just part of the rim, or around the whole thing.

This Hocus Pocus cocktail is great to make in large batches for a party, and I have the recipe for that, along with a few variations further down this post. But first, the ingredients!

Ingredients used in this Hocus Pocus Cocktail

  • Vodka – use your favorite brand
  • Spiced Rum – use your favorite brand
  • Blue Curaçao – a blue, orange-flavored liqueur
  • Pineapple Juice
  • Wilton Black Sparkle Gelthis comes in tubes that you can pipe directly onto the glass
  • Maraschino Cherrieswith stems if possible

How to make a Hocus Pocus Cocktail

There are several ways you can mix Halloween cocktails – you can shake them, stir them, or blend them…. for this concoction, we’re shaking all the way!

Before mixing your witchy drink you will want to get the glass prepared first, so squeeze a drip pattern along the rim and set it aside to dry.

Then it’s as simple as placing all the ingredients and lots of ice into a cocktail shaker, and shake, shake, shake until blended!

Don’t worry if you don’t have a cocktail shaker, you could just use a container with a tight-fitting lid – like a mason jar, water bottle, or even the cup on a blender or smoothie maker.

Pour your Hocus Pocus Potion into the prepared glass filled with ice and garnish with three maraschino cherries – one for each sister!

Hocus Pocus Cocktail Variations

I always like to try and give variations on the cocktails I share on The Purple Pumpkin Blog, and especially turning the cocktail into a mocktail so that non-drinkers and kids can enjoy the drink too!

So that non-drinkers and kids can enjoy a glass of Hocus Pocus Potion there are a couple of ways that I think you could twist the recipe.

Virgin Hocus Pocus Potion (Mocktail)

For a non-alcoholic adult version, use blue curaçao syrup and I found that Monin has a Caribbean syrup which is described as “Nose of Caribbean rum aged in oak barrel; sweet rum taste with notes of fruits and vanilla … will convert rum-based alcoholic cocktails to their non-alcoholic versions without losing the rum aroma“; so that could be used instead of the spiced rum. Just leave out the vodka, and follow the recipe as in the card above. However, you may have to experiment with the syrup quantities, perhaps start with a half-measure of each of the syrups as you can always add more if you needed to.

For a kid’s version, mix equal parts of pineapple juice and orange juice and add some green food color. Serve over ice in glasses decorated as in the adult beverage.

I love the Monin brand of syrups as there are lots of flavors and they are a very versatile ingredient that can be used in cocktails, mocktails, coffee, cocoa, shakes, smoothies, and more.

Frozen Potion

Want to turn this drink into a frozen cocktail slushie? Easy! Put all the ingredients in a blender with a generous amount of crushed ice – then blend till smooth. Serve with a straw, and watch out for brain freeze!

Hocus Pocus Party Punch

If you want to make a large batch of this cocktail for a crowd, it is really easy to do.

As long as you use the same measuring container (glass, cup, jug, etc) for the “1 part”, the ratios will be correct and you can make as much as you need to. Serve in drinks dispensers, or pitchers, or go really retro and serve it from a punch bowl!

Make sure you add plenty of ice to your serving receptacle of choice and add maraschino cherries for garnish. If serving in a punch bowl you could add black gel drips to the rim.

To make a batch of Hocus Pocus Party Punch, mix together:

  • 1 part Vodka
  • 1 part Spiced Rum
  • ½ part Blue Curaçao
  • 6 parts Pineapple Juice
