Lucky Charms Cookies
These cookies are full of charm and whimsy and oh so magical!
A basic cookie dough gets an injection of luck thanks to the marshmallow bits from a box of Lucky Charms cereal. But not only that, the cookies are green and have a mint-choc flavor too.
If you don’t like mint-choc, then just leave out the mint extract – simple!
You will have to sort through a box of cereal to dig out the hearts, stars, horseshoes, clovers, unicorns, blue moons, pots of gold, rainbows, and the red balloons – but why not get the kids to do it? It’ll be like they’re hunting for treasure!
Did you know that the marshmallows are meant to represent Lucky’s magical charms, each with their own special meaning or “power.”
- Hearts – power to bring things to life
- Shooting Stars – power to fly
- Horseshoes – power to speed/slow down time
- Green Clovers – luck, but you will never know what kind of luck you will get
- Blue Moons – power of invisibility
- Rainbows – instantaneous travel from place to place
- Red Balloons – power to make things float
- Unicorn – according to the inaugural cereal box, unicorns can “cleanse water with a touch of their horn,” “heal whatever troubles you,” and “always know when you are telling the truth”
- Moon – power to change alternate gravity

Alongside regular baking ingredients like butter, flour, sugar, etc., you will need some more specialized ingredients which I’ve linked below to Amazon for your convenience.
For my UK readers: When I go on vacation to the USA, I like to stock up on my favourite American food products and ingredients, so you’ll find them used in some of the recipes on The Purple Pumpkin Blog. However, we can buy a lot of American ingredients online these days, and in supermarkets (check the World Foods aisle!) which is awesome! (Although sometimes the price can be on the high side…) When I use American ingredients in recipes that I share on my blog, I always aim to suggest British alternatives or include Amazon affiliate links to where you can buy them online.
- Mint Extract or Peppermint Extract – you can use mint or peppermint extract according to your personal preference. The difference between the two is that peppermint extract is just peppermint, whereas mint extract is a combination of various mints including spearmint and peppermint.
- Cream of Tartar – a rising agent that also gives cookies their chewy texture.
- Green Food Coloring – gel, paste, or liquid – whatever you have in your pantry. I tend to stick to gels or paste color as the color is more vibrant and it doesn’t change the consistency of the batter.
- Chocolate Chips
- Lucky Charms Cereal – if you can’t find this, why not try using St. Patrick’s Day cupcake sprinkles instead?
Lucky Charms Cookie Making Tips
- This recipe uses, of course, Lucky Charms cereal – but only the marshmallows! You will have to pick out one-and-a-half cupfuls of them. You can sometimes find just the marshmallows, but I’m not sure if these are a limited edition thing.
- If you can’t source Lucky Charms you could use regular mini marshmallows and some suitably themed cupcake sprinkles instead – there is always a way!
- When adding food coloring, remember that you can always add more – but not take it away!
- These cookies use an ingredient called cream of tartar which gives them a soft, chewy texture.
- Don’t overmix your cookie dough!
- Use a small ice cream scoop to scoop out the cookie dough evenly to roll into balls.
- Place the dough balls 2 inches apart on a parchment-lined cookie sheet.
- Or use a silicone mat with guidelines to get evenly spaced cookies.
- Allow the cookies to cool on the sheet for a couple of minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
- You could press in some extra marshmallow pieces and chocolate chips on the still-warm cookies to pack them with even more luck!
- The cookies taste best in the first few days but will last for a week in an airtight container.

- ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
- ½ cup brown sugar, packed
- ¼ cup white sugar
- 1 egg
- ¾ tsp peppermint extract
- Green food coloring gel
- 1½ cups flour
- ½ tsp baking soda (bicarbonate of soda)
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1 tsp cream of tartar
- ¼ tsp salt
- 1 cup chocolate chips
- 1½ cups Marshmallows from Lucky Charms cereal
- Preheat oven to 180C/350F/Gas 4 and line a cookie sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat.
- Place the butter and sugars into a large mixing bowl and cream together with a wooden spoon, spatula, or handheld mixer.
- Add the egg, mint extract, and some green food coloring and mix to get the color you desire. Remember you can always add more color but not take it away!
- Sieve the flour, baking soda, baking powder, cream of tartar and salt into another bowl and then add to the wet mixture. Stirring to combine into a dough.
- Fold the chocolate chips and Lucky Charms marshmallows into the dough until evenly distributed.
- Use a small ice-cream scoop to scoop even pieces of dough and roll into small balls. Place them 2-inches apart on the prepared cookie sheets.
- Bake the cookies for 10 minutes.
- Leave to cool for 2 minutes on the cookie sheet - you could press in some extra marshmallow pieces and chocolate chips if you like.
- Transfer to a wire rack to cool completely before enjoying.
