Clay Pot Reindeer Decoration

Using clay pots (aka terra cotta pots aka flowerpots) to make animals and characters is pretty fun!
So far we’ve made a Super Cute Flowerpot Easter Bunny and a Trio of Flowerpot Chicks.
And now we’ve got this ever-so-cute clay pot reindeer decoration, using small pots, that you can hang up on your Christmas tree!
You could also use the reindeer as a place card for holiday dinners, or even as a fun tag for gifts!
If you prefer, you can use a larger pot and have it as a stand-alone decoration for the mantle or bookshelf.
This clay pot craft is a family fun activity to complete with the kiddos.
So read on to see what craft supplies you need and you can transform a clay pot into a reindeer decoration just in time for the holidays!
Materials & Tools Used in This Craft
For your convenience, I’ve linked [some of] the materials and tools needed for this project to Amazon below. The quantities are on the craft tutorial card at the end of this post.
- Small Clay Pot – approximately 2.5″/6cm in diameter. You can of course make the reindeer any size you like! Larger ones probably won’t hang on a tree so easily though.
- Acrylic Paints – in the colors: Dark Brown, Kelly Green, Pink, and Yellow.
- Natural Jute Twine
- Googly Eyes
- Pom Poms – you will need a large red tinsel one.
- Pipe Cleaners – also known as chenille stems, in the color brown.
- Brown Felt – to make the reindeer ears. You could use craft foam or cardstock instead.
- Hot Glue Gun and Glue Sticks
- Scissors
- Paintbrush – this is a set of paintbrushes of various sizes and types for different types of paint and glue.
- Pencil with New Eraser – this is to dot the reindeer’s rosy cheek on. You could paint them freehand if you like.
Cheap Craft Supplies
A great thing about this craft idea is that it can be budget-friendly using supplies you may already have or can be purchased cheaply in stores:
If you’re in the USA, check out your local Dollar Store or Dollar Tree; and if you’re in the UK, the Poundshop, The Range, Wilko, and Baker Ross are great places to shop for cheap and inexpensive craft supplies.
To the rest of the world reading this – I don’t know every cheap store out there – sorry! But please do hunt the ones out in your location for crafting bargains!

Clay Pot Reindeer Craft

Materials
- 2.5"/6cm Clay Pot
- Acrylic Craft Paint – Dark Brown, Kelly Green, Pink, Yellow
- Natural Jute Twine
- 2 Googly Eyes
- 1 Large Red Tinsel Pom Pom
- 2 Brown Pipe Cleaners (Chenille Stems)
- Brown Felt
Tools
- Glue Gun and Glue Sticks
- Scissors
- Paintbrush
- Pencil with New Eraser
Instructions
- Basecoat the rim of the clay pot with kelly green acrylic craft paint. Let the paint dry and then apply a second coat, if necessary.
- Basecoat the remaining section of the clay pot with dark brown acrylic craft paint. Set aside to dry. Apply a second coat, if necessary.
- Attach two googly eyes and the red tinsel pom pom to the reindeer with a glue gun and glue sticks. Add polka dot cheeks to the Reindeer by dipping a new pencil eraser into pink acrylic craft paint. Set aside to dry.
- Create polka dots around the kelly green rim by dipping a new pencil eraser into bright yellow acrylic craft paint. Set aside to dry.
- Bend both brown pipe cleaners into antler shapes and insert them into the hole at the top of the clay pot. Secure from the inside with a glue gun and glue sticks.
- Cut two ear shapes from a scrap of brown felt then fold them in half and glue them to the top right and top left of the reindeer.
- Cut a 12"/30cm length of natural jute twine, tie it in a loop with a knot, and attach it to the top of the clay pot reindeer with a glue gun and glue sticks.
- When dry, create jingle bells from the yellow polka dots by drawing a small plus sign in the center of each with a permanent black marker.
Notes
Tip: You can use liquid craft glue for this project, but you would have to wait for it to dry.
