The Shamrock Shake is a seasonal green mint-flavored milkshake dessert sold at some McDonald’s restaurants during March to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day in the US, Canada, and Ireland. – Wiki
Sadly, we don’t have them here in the UK – and if you don’t have them in your part of the world, you can always make your own right?!
However, we’ve spiked our Irish-themed milkshake with Vanilla Vodka, Irish Cream Liqueur, and Crème de Menthe to make a delicious boozy Shamrock Shake that is definitely not for kids.
That said, we’ve included how you can make a virgin, mocktail version in our guide.
So read on and learn how to make these luscious green milkshakes for St. Patrick’s Day!
Ingredients For Boozy Shamrock Shakes
For your convenience, I’ve linked any specialized ingredients needed for this recipe to Amazon below.
- Mint Chocolate Chip Ice Cream
- Vanilla Vodka – if you can’t source this, add a drop of vanilla extract to plain vodka.
- Baileys Irish Cream – I always use Baileys, but any branded Irish cream liqueur will work too.
- Crème De Menthe – a sweet, mint-flavored alcoholic beverage. Available in clear and green. Use the green kind to add more color to your Boozy Shamrock Shake!
- Chocolate Mint Baking Chips – for added minty-chocolatey goodness! You could also sprinkle some on top for garnish if you like.
- Whipped Cream – from a can, or you can make your own if you like.
- Fresh Mint – for garnish
- Maraschino Cherries – for garnish. We used red and green cherries.

Virgin Shamrock Shake (Non-Alcoholic)
So that non-drinkers can enjoy a non-boozy Shamrock Shake we simply remove the alcohol and replace it!
In a blender, combine:
- 2 cups Mint Chocolate Chip Ice Cream
- 2 oz Whole Milk
- ½-1 oz Mint Extract*
- ¼ cup Chocolate Mint Baking Chips
When smooth and combined, divide the milkshake between two tall glasses and garnish with whipped cream, mint leaves, and/or cocktail cherries as desired.
You could even add some shamrock sprinkles!
*Start with a half-measure and increase to a full measure if desired.
For adults who would still like to enjoy the taste of alcohol in their mocktail, you could try non-alcoholic alternatives.
In the UK, try Lyre’s, which is also available on Amazon in the UK and Amazon.com.
There is also Strykk There are other brands, but this one was more widely available.
- Instead of Vanilla Vodka, try using Strykk Not Vanilla Vodka.
- Instead of Baileys, use whole milk.
- Instead of Crème de Menthe, use mint extract (start with a half-measure, and increase to a full measure to taste, if desired.)
Use the non-alcoholic alternatives instead of the alcoholic ones in the recipe card.
Big Batches of Boozy Shamrock Shakes
Because most of us are limited to certain sizes of blenders, making big batches of this St. Patrick’s Day milkshake isn’t so straightforward.
The best thing to do is to make it to serve. The recipe makes 2 milkshakes, but you could possibly double that (depending on the size of your blender) to make 4 servings at a time.
This cocktail recipe is intended for adults of the legal drinking age in your country of residence.
Please drink responsibly. Do not drink and drive.
