American Flag Cupcakes
A celebration isn’t complete without cake, and to celebrate Independence Day, why not make a batch of these American flag cupcakes?
There is nothing more patriotic than the red, white and blue of the nation’s flag! The stars and stripes are replicated to their simplest form using white frosting, and blue and red M&M’s!
These 4th of July cupcakes are easy to make, thanks to using a boxed cake mix and canned frosting. If you want to make them even easier you could buy ready-made cupcakes from the grocery store, and decorate at home. A perfect solution if you are pressed for time.
Of course, you can also make your own cupcakes and frosting using your favorite recipes. I have been using the same, go-to vanilla cupcake, and frosting recipe for years. The measurements are in grams (I’m working on converting all of my recipes, but it takes time!), so a set of food scales will come in handy to measure the ingredients.
The number of cupcakes you make will depend on the box of cake mix that you use. The 15.25oz box of Betty Crocker Super Moist Vanilla Cake Mix says it makes 24 cupcakes and calls for the addition of oil, eggs, and water. Check your box for instructions, line a cupcake tin with the correct amount of cupcake liners, and pre-heat your oven.
Mix the cupcake mix according to the box instructions, and divide between the cupcake liners, and bake for instructed time (most standard cupcakes are around 10-15 minutes, they are cooked when an inserted skewer comes out of the cupcake clean). Then leave to cool on a wire cooling rack.
Once the cupcakes are fully cooled, it is time to decorate! Attach a round tip to a piping bag and fill with vanilla frosting. For ease, use store bought stuff, but if want to make your own – go for it!
If you don’t have a piping bag, no problem, just place the frosting inside a plastic food bag, and snip off the corner to create a DIY piping bag! And if you really don’t want to bother with piping the frosting onto your cupcakes, just spread it on with a knife!
For the finishing touch, add blue and red M&M’s (or other similar candy) to create the American flag. You might be able to find red, white, and blue mixed bags of M&M’s in stores – but if you can’t, just pick them out of regular bags!
Place six blue M&M’s in the left corner of your cupcake, in a kind of triangle (as shown in the photo below), and then arrange lines of red M&M’s to make the flag’s stripes. Don’t forget to turn the candy over, so that the ‘M’ is hidden!
And that’s it! Your American flag cupcakes are made. I told you it was super simple. Now all you have to do is eat and enjoy!
