Printable Chinese New Year Activities
We have been sharing free Chinese New Year Printables since the Year of the Monkey in 2016, and our Chinese New Year activity pack arrived in 2020 for the Year of the Rat.
This year’s updated Year of the Horse pack includes more activity sheets, a great way to teach kids of all ages about Chinese New Year traditions. The puzzle solutions are also included.
We have one new addition for 20265 and the Year of the Horse.
The first is a full-color front cover that you can combine with any of our Chinese New Year printables to create a booklet for your children or students. And a vocabulary list describing the words used across the puzzles in the pack.
Year of the Horse
Chinese New Year, which ushers in the Year of the Horse, starts on 17 February 2026.

Your Chinese zodiac is Horse if you were born in one of these years: 1954, 1966, 1978, 1990, 2001, 2014, and 2026.
So that you can celebrate the beginning of a new year, the printables are updated annually to reflect that year’s zodiac animal.
You’ll find full-color and gold versions of our Free Printable Build A Horse in the updated printables.

Chinese New Year Activity #1: Coloring Pages
There are eight coloring pages in the pack.
Grab the markers, crayons, or coloring pencils and color the Year of the Horse, Year of the Snake,  Year of the Dragon, Year of the Rabbit, Year of the Tiger, Year of the Ox, and Year of the Rat.
These are the color versions of our buildable characters.Â
The final Chinese New Year coloring page in this pack features a Lion Dance and the Chinese character set for Kung Hei Fat Choi, Cantonese for Wishing You Prosperity!

Chinese New Year Activity #2: Grid Copy *NEW!*
The grid copy activity is a calm, screen-free way for kids to practice focus and attention to detail.
Children copy the picture of a Chinese Lion from one grid to a blank grid, square by square, helping them slow down and examine the shapes, lines, and proportions.
This type of activity is great for building visual perception, concentration, and early drawing skills.
Chinese New Year Activity #3: Crossword
This Chinese New Year crossword features colorful illustrations of festive symbols like lanterns, firecrackers, and lucky coins.
Instead of text clues, kids match the illustrations to the grid. We have included the name of each item, just in case they are not obvious!
To figure out where to place the words, counting the letters is a great place to start.
Chinese New Year Activity #4: Word Searches
There are three word searches (easy, medium, and hard) with words related to the Chinese New Year theme, such as red packets, Jade Emperor, lion dance, firecrackers, kumquats, and dragon.
Combine this activity with the vocabulary list also included in the printable activities pack.
Chinese New Year Activity #5: Word Scrambles
With two sets of word scrambles, these free Chinese New Year worksheets will help increase vocabulary.
One set of words refers to the twelve Chinese zodiac animals, and the other is more general about the vibrant Chinese festival, including money, lanterns, firecrackers, and noodles.
Chinese New Year Activity #6: Mazes
Each of the four mazes features a fun task that children will love!
They can help the horse gallop through a traditional maze to get some Chinese food and guide the animals to reach the Jade Emperor in the center of a circular maze.
In the two remaining mazes, they can show kids how to get to the Lantern Festival and take the family to watch the Lion Dance.
Chinese New Year Activities #7, #8, and #9
- Line Tracing: This activity helps to enhance fine motor skills as you trace over the lines from one side of the page to the other.
- Shadow Matching: A visual skills activity where you match the full-color image with the correct shadow. Can you recognize a fortune cookie shadow from a dragon?!
- Envelope Template: Print it out on red paper to make a lucky red envelope. In China and other Asian countries celebrating the Lunar New Year, red envelopes are filled with money and given to wish a happy new year. The red color symbolizes good luck and wards off evil spirits.
