Introducing—Hongma the Horse!

Hongma (紅馬) means “Red Horse.” In Chinese culture, red symbolizes luck, happiness, and good fortune, while the horse represents strength, energy, and success.
Together, Hongma is a festive symbol of positive energy and forward momentum—making this buildable horse a perfect craft for celebrating Chinese New Year and the Year of the Horse.
If you are a regular on The Purple Pumpkin Blog, you’ll notice that our animal characters have a cute, chubby anthropomorphic style, which means they have human traits—like standing on two legs instead of four.
Our Free Printable Buildable Characters are an excellent activity for kids of all ages, whether at home, at an activity group or club, during homeschooling, or in the classroom.
Papercrafts like our cute buildables help kids with their cutting and pasting skills. They can be creative with other materials, such as sticking on pieces of fabric or sequins, or using glitter glue.

How To Use the Build a Horse Printable
- Download the PDF file at the end of this post and print as many copies as you need onto white (printer) paper. For best results, use good-quality, thick/heavy paper.
- Alternatively, you can use the pieces as a template to trace onto coloured paper or card stock and build a horse with them.
- Print the free printable at home, at school, at work, or at a Print Shop, then cut the pieces out with scissors.
- The printables are suitable for children of all ages; however, some may need help cutting.
- Once cut, arrange the pieces to determine where everything goes before sticking them in place with a glue stick or sticky tape.
- We like using this roller glue because it is easy to use and has less sticky mess!
Craft Projects Using our Free Printable Horse Templates
- Adding Dimension: Mount the cutouts onto larger construction paper and embellish them with other craft materials, such as glitter, craft foam, or tissue paper. This is a perfect activity for an art class.
- Laminating: This fun craft is still possible for tiny kids who can’t yet use scissors! Use a laminator to laminate the printable, then cut out each shape, leaving a slight margin around each. Place Velcro Dots so the character can be assembled without cutting or gluing.
- Moveable Figure: Construct the character using split pins/brads instead of glue to make it moveable.
- Everybody Loves Puppets: Grab some popsicle sticks to make little puppets for role-playing or storytelling.
- Festive Decorations: Attach several to ribbon or string and hang them as bunting. They would make excellent decorations for a party or for hanging in your classroom. Add colored paper to the back of each one for a neater finish.
- Mobile: Similar to the previous idea, assemble several characters and glue them back-to-back, with some ribbon between them. Hang them at different lengths on a wire hanger for a cute decoration.
Roll-A-Horse Game
- This idea is based on the classic dice game and is a lot of fun to play!
- To set up, print, and cut enough horse pieces for each player, assign each piece a number.
- Depending on the number of pieces, you may need to use one or two dice or combine pieces so that each has a corresponding number.
- After rolling the die, the player picks up the corresponding piece to build their horse.
- If players roll a number for a piece they already have, they skip their turn.
- The winner is the first player to collect all the parts and assemble them!
