This pretty layered Tropical Margarita is one of our Unique Margarita Recipes and a very attractive take on your normal margarita cocktail.

It uses three flavors of tequila and is layered with different tropical juices resulting in a refreshing and zingy summertime drink to sip in the sun!

Layered Tropical Margarita

The full ingredients list and instructions are found in the printable recipe card at the end of this post. I highly recommend reading the blog post all the way through so that you don’t miss any tips or substitution suggestions and ensure that you have all the ingredients and equipment required and understand the steps and timings involved.

Classic margaritas are made with tequila, orange liqueur, and lime juice often served with salt on the rim of the glass.

But we’ve put a twist on that classic with this layered tropical margarita!

There are three flavors of tequila in this cocktail (but if you struggle to find them, I’ve got alternative options), and they are mixed with fruit juice drinks to create a layered effect.

This is definitely a statement beverage that deserves center stage at your next gathering – or if you just want to feel super fancy while enjoying a cocktail on a sunny day outside!

Ingredients Used In This Cocktail

For your convenience, I’ve linked any specialized ingredients needed for this recipe to Amazon below.

  • Almond Tequila – can’t find this? Use Amaretto instead.
  • Margaritaville Tangerine Tequila – can’t find this? Use Triple Sec instead.
  • Rock N Roll Mango Tequila – can’t find this? Use Mango Vodka instead.
  • De Kuyper Pineapple Liqueur
  • Orange Juice
  • Hawaiian Punch Fruit Juicy Redor any red fruit juice drink
  • Hawaiian Punch Green Berry Rushor any green fruit juice drink

This cocktail is shaken, but don’t worry if you don’t have a cocktail shaker, you could just use a container with a tight-fitting lid – like a mason jar or even the cup on a blender or smoothie maker.

Layered Tropical Margarita Variations

I like to try and give variations on the cocktails shared on The Purple Pumpkin Blog, like how to turn the cocktail into a mocktail so that non-drinkers (and kids if suitable) can enjoy the drink too!

Virgin Layered Tropical Margarita Mocktail (Non-Alcoholic)

So that non-drinkers can enjoy a this tropical drink we simply remove the alcohol and replace it!

In a cocktail shaker, shake together:

and divide between two empty 10-oz glasses, then fill the glass with ice. In a clean shaker, shake together:

and pour into the glass. Finally, in a clean shaker, shake together:

and pour into the glass. Garnish with orange and/or lime slices, and maraschino cherries.

I love the Monin brand of syrups as there are lots of flavors and they are a very versatile ingredient that can be used in cocktails, mocktails, coffee, cocoa, shakes, smoothies, and more.

I haven’t made the mocktail version, so I recommend adding the syrups to taste as they may add a sweetness that you may not necessarily get from alcoholic liqueurs.

For adults who would still like to enjoy the taste of alcohol in their mocktail, you could try non-alcoholic tequila alternatives. In the UK, try Lyre’s, which is also available on Amazon in the UK and Amazon.com. There are other brands, but this one was more widely available.

You can use a combination of the tequila-style spirits and syrups listed above.

Frozen Layered Tropical Margarita

Want to turn this tropical drink into a frozen slushie? Easy! Put all the ingredients (for each layer, separately) in a blender with a generous amount of ice – then blend till smooth. Pour into glasses to layer the drink. Serve with a straw, and watch out for brain freeze! You could do the same with the mocktail version too.

Layered Tropical Margarita For a Crowd!

Want to make a big batch of Layered Tropical Margaritas for a party or gathering? It’s so easy!

As long as you use the same measuring container (glass, cup, jug, etc.,) for the “1 part”, the ratios will be correct and you can make as much as you need to.

To serve the drink layered as shown, you will have to make batches of each layer separately, then layer into glasses individually.

Alternatively, you could mix everything together to get a one-color drink.

To make a big batch of the yellow/orange layer, mix together:

  • 1 part Margaritaville Tangerine Tequila
  • 1 part Rock N Roll Mango Tequila
  • 4 parts Orange Juice

To make a big batch of the orange/red layer, mix together:

  • 2 part De Kuyper Pineapple Liqueur
  • 4 part Caribbean Red Tropical Punch

To make a big batch of the green layer, mix together:

  • 1 part Almond Tequila
  • 2 part Hawaiian Green Fruit Punch

Serve the large batch (of mixed color) cocktail in drinks dispensers, or pitchers, or go really retro and serve from a punch bowl! Whichever container best suits your event (and the drink!).

Make sure you add plenty of ice to your serving container of choice to keep the cocktail chilled. And you can add some fruit garnish in there too such as orange slices, lime slices, and maraschino cherries.

Or why not skewer the fruit onto cocktail picks for guests to garnish their drink?
