Hawaiian Margarita
The recipe for this cocktail is found at the end of the post. However, before you scroll, this post is filled with helpful info that you won’t want to miss and variations of the original recipe, too – including a mocktail version!
It’s always five o’clock somewhere, right? At least according to Margaritaville song by Jimmy Buffet!
So whether you want a tropical drink to enjoy on a sunny evening or need a big-batch cocktail for a party, make sure that Hawaiian Margaritas are in your cocktail-making arsenal!
What is a Margarita?
Like many cocktails, the famous margarita—a cocktail made with tequila, orange liqueur, and lime juice—has several origin stories.
It would seem that the margarita was first invented in the 1930s and is a Mexican and American drink. The word margarita is Spanish for daisy.
Traditionally, margaritas are served in the eponymous margarita glass, a stepped-diameter variant of a cocktail glass or champagne coupe. The rim of the glass is often dipped in salt.
With just three ingredients, the classic margarita can be made into many variations using different flavoured liqueurs, fruit sodas, beer, vegetable juices, and fruit juices—the latter being used in this Hawaiian Marg!

Ingredients used in this cocktail
Tequila
You can’t have margaritas without tequila! Tequila is an alcoholic beverage made from the blue agave plant, primarily in the area surrounding the Mexican city of Tequila.
Tequila is so regulated that it can only be distilled from blue agave in five Mexican states.
Orange Liqueur
In addition to Tequila, margaritas also contain an orange liqueur – this could be Cointreau, Triple Sec, Grand Marnier (which, when used, is called a Cadillac Margarita), or even Blue Curaçao, which will make a Blue Margarita.
Lime Juice
Limes give margaritas a tart edge. Whether you use regular limes or can buy Key Limes, it’s all good!
Pineapple Juice
Of all the fruit juices, pineapple juice is my favourite. The tropical taste is a wonderful addition to luau cocktails (and mocktails!). Pineapple juice contains vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants (so you know this cocktail is healthy!).
Coconut Water
You have probably seen bottles and cartons of coconut water for sale in grocery stores and supermarkets. It has health benefits in that it is a source of potassium and keeps you hydrated (this margarita is getting healthier by the minute!).
Coconut water forms naturally inside a young, green coconut, is around 94% water, and has very little fat.
Don’t confuse it with coconut milk or coconut cream. They are created from the meat of the coconut and are not used in this cocktail.
Fruit Garnish
You can’t have a cocktail without some sort of garnish! Skewer onto cocktail picks or hang off the side of the glass.
For this Hawaiian-themed drink, use maraschino cherries, lime wedges or slices, and/or pineapple wedges.

Easy Hawaiian Cocktails
A tropical Hawaiian party is probably one of my favourite themes because it is bright, colorful, and festive by nature.
Think of vibrant tropical flora and fauna, such as hibiscus, orchids, monstera leaves, palm trees, parrots, and flamingos. Then you’ve got tiki torches, tiki statues, and leis…

Mixing Hawaiian Cocktails
We’ll get our cocktail groove on (like Tom Cruise in the movie Cocktail) and shake this bad boy up in a cocktail shaker.
Pour the liquid ingredients and ice into a cocktail shaker, shake, shake, and shake until combined.
Don’t worry if you don’t have a cocktail shaker. You could use a container with a tight-fitting lid – like a mason jar, water bottle, or even the cup on a blender or smoothie maker.
Pour your shaken cocktail into a margarita glass (or any glass—it all goes down the same!) filled with ice, and garnish with lime slices, pineapple wedges, and/or maraschino cherries.
Need some food to go with this cocktail? For a cocktail party, Bacon-Wrapped Water Chestnuts Party Appetizer with Spicy Mustard Dip is a tiki classic.
Or, for a more substantial meal, try Hawaiian Huli Huli Chicken Tacos topped with fresh pineapple, mango, and avocado salsa from A Simple Pantry.

Hawaiian Margarita Variations
I’m all about giving options when I share recipes on The Purple Pumpkin Blog, and I’ve got several ways you can switch things up in this Hawaiian Margarita!
Virgin Hawaiian Margarita (Mocktail)
You can easily make a Virgin Hawaiian Margarita so that non-drinkers and kids can enjoy a taste of Hawaii at your luau.
To make Hawaiian Margarita Mocktails:
- Mix 1 part orange juice with
- 1 part lime juice,
- 2 parts coconut water, and
- 3 parts pineapple juice.
- Shake with ice and serve over ice with fruit garnish.
For non-drinking adults, you could use Triple Sec Syrup instead – which doesn’t contain alcohol but is made with orange and bitter orange peel, giving the virgin cocktail the bitter taste that margaritas can have. You could also use a non-alcoholic margarita mix too.
Experiment with the options to make your perfect Hawaiian Mocktail!
There is always the option of alcohol-free spirits, such as the ones from Lyres, which are available in many countries around the world.
- Lyre’s Agave Reserva Non-Alcoholic Spirit – Tequila Style
- Lyre’s Blanco Margarita Nonalcoholic Cocktail Set – (2 pack), Agave Blanco (Tequila Style), and Orange Sec (Triple Sec Style)
Frozen Hawaiian Margarita
Want to turn this tropical drink into a frozen slushie? Easy!
Put all the ingredients in a blender with a generous amount of crushed ice, then blend until smooth. Serve with a straw, and watch out for brain freeze!
For an extra pineapple hit, you could replace some ice with frozen pineapple chunks.
To make a frozen margarita mocktail, follow the same instructions as above, but use the mocktail ingredients instead.

Hawaiian Margarita Party Punch
If you want to make Hawaiian Margaritas for a crowd, you can easily make a large batch of the cocktail!
If you use the same measuring container (glass, cup, jug, etc.) for the “1 part,” the ratios will be correct, and you can make as much as you need to. Mix together:
- 1 part Orange Liqueur
- 2 parts Tequila
- 2 parts Coconut Water
- 3 parts Pineapple Juice
- ½ part Lime Juice
Serve in drinks dispensers or pitchers, or go retro and serve it from a punch bowl!
Make sure you add plenty of ice to your serving container of choice and add lime slices, small chunks of pineapple, and cherries for an extra fruity treat.
Serve your Hawaiian Margaritas with some Hawaiian Salsa and chips!
This cocktail recipe is intended for adults of the legal drinking age in your country of residence.
Please drink responsibly. Do not drink and drive.
