The Twelve Days of Christmas Song
“The Twelve Days of Christmas” is an English Christmas carol dating back to the late 18th century. It is a classic example of a cumulative song, meaning that each verse is built on top of the previous verses. There are twelve verses, each describing a gift given by “my true love” on one of the twelve days of Christmas.
The song’s history is fascinating, and there are actually many variations of both the lyrics and the melody!
Our 12 Days of Christmas coloring pages are based on the 1909 version:
- On the first day of Christmas my true love sent to me… A partridge in a pear tree.
- On the second day of Christmas my true love sent to me… Two turtle doves.
- On the third day of Christmas my true love sent to me… Three French hens.
- On the fourth day of Christmas my true love sent to me… Four calling birds.
- On the fifth day of Christmas my true love sent to me… Five gold rings.
- On the sixth day of Christmas my true love sent to me… Six geese a-laying.
- On the seventh day of Christmas my true love sent to me… Seven swans a-swimming.
- On the eighth day of Christmas my true love sent to me… Eight maids a-milking.
- On the ninth day of Christmas my true love sent to me… Nine ladies dancing.
- On the tenth day of Christmas my true love sent to me… Ten lords a-leaping.
- On the eleventh day of Christmas my true love sent to me… Eleven pipers piping.
- On the twelfth day of Christmas my true love sent to me… Twelve drummers drumming.
These are the lyrics we grew up singing in the UK. If you have a different version, let us know in the comments!
