Materials & Tools Used in This Craft
The materials and tools needed for this project have been linked to Amazon below for your convenience. The quantities are on the craft tutorial card at the end of this post.
- Peat Pots—These form the candy corn buckets. They are typically 3.15″/8cm. We used a biodegradable peat pot because it won’t break if dropped, but you can also use a paper mache flowerpot, clay, or terra pot for this craft.
- Acrylic Craft Paints—You’ll need white, orange, and yellow.
- Gingham Ribbon—Use 5/8″ (1.5cm) black and white gingham to create bucket handles and a different color for the ghost tags. (We used blue)
- Glue Gun and Glue Sticks—Essential for securely attaching the ribbons and ghost tags. If crafting with kids, opt for a low-temp glue gun for added safety.
- Permanent Black Marker—Used to create fun ghost faces on the printable tags.
- Crinkle Paper—Adds a festive filler effect inside the bucket. If you can’t find crinkle paper, shredded tissue paper works just as well and can be found in many fun Halloween colors.
- White Cardstock—Sturdy paper for printing the ghost tags.
- Scissors—Used to cut out the ghost tags and ribbon.
- Paintbrush—This is used to apply paint to the peat pots.
- Single Hole Punch—This makes it easy to create ribbon holes on the sides of the bucket.
- Free Printable Ghost Tags—Click to download the PDF (opens in new tab), which you can print on US Letter or A4 paper sizes. Personalize the tags with a ghost face and message, then attach them for the perfect finishing touch.

- Seasonal Pots: Get creative with color! Use pink, red, and white for Valentine’s Day or red, green, and white for Christmas.
- Ribbon Cutting Trick: Cutting the ribbon ends at an angle or in a V-shape is pretty and prevents fraying.
- Add Sparkle: Want to add some extra magic? Brush on clear glue and sprinkle glitter over the painted sections for extra Halloween sparkle. Glitter Glue Pens are a less messy option!
- Customize the Tags: Color the ghost tags and add different facial expressions. You could also cut other spooky shapes like bats or pumpkins.
- Use Mod Podge for Durability: Apply a layer of Mod Podge or clear sealant over the paint to protect the pots and give them a glossy finish.
- Vary the Ribbon Colors: For a custom look, use other Halloween-themed ribbons, such as orange and black stripes or purple.
- Use Tissue Paper: If you can’t find crinkle paper, shredded tissue paper works just as well and is available in many fun Halloween colors.
- Hot Glue Alternatives: If you don’t have a glue gun, double-sided tape or craft glue can also be used to attach the tags and decorations.
- Make It a Party Favor Station: If you’re using these at a Halloween party, set up a craft station where kids can decorate their own candy corn buckets and fill them with their favorite treats!
