What is Cinco de Mayo?
Cinco de Mayo commemorates the Mexican Army’s victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5th, 1862.
Despite common misconceptions, it’s not Mexican Independence Day—that’s celebrated on September 16th.
Cinco de Mayo is a minor holiday in Mexico but has evolved into a significant annual celebration of Mexican culture and heritage in the United States. You can learn more about the Franco-Mexican war on History.com
Primarily observed in the United States, Cinco de Mayo has become a day to celebrate Mexican-American culture, rather than a commemoration of the battle.
From parade floats and mariachi music to enjoying Mexican food and making Mexican crafts, it’s a day for everyone to appreciate the rich contributions of Mexican heritage.
We LOVE Mexican food on The Purple Pumpkin Blog and have 70+ Mexican and Tex-Mex Recipes for Parties & Family Meals for you to try!
Why not make some dishes like Fresh Homemade Tomato Salsa, Pozole Rojo de Pollo (Red Pozole with Chicken), Steak Street Tacos, Mexican Buñuelos and enjoy some good food with the fun activities as part of your celebrations.
