Build A Groundhog: Introducing Punxsutawney Phil!

Get ready for Groundhog Day and use our free printable Build a Groundhog craft template to construct your own Punxsutawney Phil!

Groundhog Minifig

When we started designing and sharing our Free Printable Buildable Characters, we never thought the body shape would replicate a real animal. But it did, for Hua Hua, the Great Panda, and now for this groundhog!

Groundhogs, also known as woodchucks, are burrowing animals in North America. They hibernate during winter and are famous for their role in predicting the weather on Groundhog Day.

Our printable characters are an excellent activity for kids of all ages, whether at home, at an activity group or club, during homeschooling, or in the classroom.

Papercrafts like our cute buildables help kids with their cutting and pasting skills. They can be creative with other materials, such as sticking on pieces of fabric or sequins or using glitter glue.

What Is Groundhog Day?

Groundhog Day is a fun and unique holiday celebrated every year on February 2nd in the United States and Canada.

According to tradition, a groundhog—like the famous Punxsutawney Phil—pops out of his burrow to check for his shadow. If he sees it, winter continues for six more weeks; if not, an early spring is on the way!

The event formally began in 1887, although its roots go back even further! What prediction will Phil make this year?

Groundhog Day printables like this one are perfect for getting kids involved in the holiday. Whether through a Groundhog Day craft, Groundhog Day coloring pages, or other printable activities, there are so many ways to celebrate!

How To Use the Build a Groundhog Printable

  • Download the PDF file at the end of this post and print as many copies as you need onto white paper. For best results, use good quality, thick/heavy paper.
  • Alternatively, you can use the pieces as a template to trace onto coloured paper or card stock and build a groundhog with them.
  • You can print the free printable at home, school, office, or a Print Shop. Then, cut the pieces out with scissors.
  • The printables are suitable for children of all ages; however, some may need help cutting.
  • Once cut, arrange the pieces to determine where everything goes before sticking them in place with a glue stick or sticky tape.
  • We like using this roller glue because it is easy to use and has less sticky mess!

Craft Projects Using our Free Printable Groundhog!

  • Adding Dimension: Mount the cutouts onto larger construction paper and embellish them with other craft materials, such as glittercraft foam, or tissue paper. This is a perfect activity for art class.
  • Laminating: This fun craft is still possible for tiny kids who can’t yet use scissors! Use a laminator to laminate the printable and cut out each shape, leaving a slight margin around them. Place Velcro Dots so the character can be assembled without cutting or gluing.
  • Moveable Figure: Construct the character using split pins/brads instead of glue to make it moveable.
  • Everybody Loves Puppets: Grab some popsicle sticks to make a groundhog puppet for role-playing or storytelling.
  • Festive Decorations: Attach several to ribbon or string and hang them as bunting. They would make excellent decorations for a party or to hang around your classroom. Add black paper to the back of each one for a neater finish.
  • Mobile: Similar to the previous idea, assemble several characters and glue them back to back with some ribbon in between. Hang them at different lengths on a wire hanger for a cute decoration.

Roll-A-Groundhog Game

  • This idea is based on the classic dice game and is so much fun to play—especially for young children!
  • To set up, print, and cut enough pieces for each player, assign each piece a number.
  • After rolling the die, the player picks up the corresponding piece to build their groundhog.
  • If players roll a number for a piece they already have, they skip their turn. The winner is the first player to collect all the parts and assemble them!
