Build Hua Hua the Panda!
When we started designing and sharing our Free Printable Buildable Characters, we never thought the body shape would replicate a real animal.

However, our characters’ rotund, triangular head and body are perfect for the giant panda Hua Hua!
Our printable characters are an excellent activity for kids of all ages, whether at home, at an activity group or club, during homeschooling, or in the classroom.
Papercrafts like our cute buildables help kids with their cutting and pasting skills. They can be creative with other materials, such as sticking on pieces of fabric or sequins or using glitter glue.
Who Is Hua Hua?
Hua Hua is a giant panda living at the Chengdu Research Base in China, where she’s an absolute superstar!

She’s smaller than other pandas because her two rows of teeth make eating more challenging.
She also has a unique, almost triangular shape. Coupled with her white fluffy fur, she has earned the nickname “onigiri,” a Japanese triangular-shaped rice ball.
Hua Hua also has short legs and one paw that turns inward, so climbing trees can be a little harder for her. But she likes to try!
Even though she’s smaller, Hua Hua is loved by everyone for her gentle personality and cute appearance. Visitors from all over the world love watching her play, nap, and interact with the other pandas.

She has become known as one of China’s “celebrity pandas” and has been given the honorary position of Director of Chengdu Culture and Tourism Bureau.

- You can pick the size that best fits your crafting plans. Print, cut, and glue the pieces together to make your very own Hua Hua!

How To Use the Printable
- Download the PDF at the end of this post and print as many copies as you need onto white (printer) paper. For best results, use good-quality, thick/heavy paper or cardstock.
- You can print the free printable at home, school, the office, or a Print Shop. Then, cut the pieces out with scissors.
- Alternatively, you can use the pieces as a template to trace onto coloured paper and build Hua Hua with them.
- The Hua Hau printable is suitable for children of all ages; however, the free regular-size template is better suited for older children who are more skilled at cutting or those looking to hone their fine motor skills.
- The large size should be much easier for younger children. They may need help cutting the bamboo sticks. You know your children, so you will know what suits them best.
- Once cut, arrange the pieces to determine where everything goes before sticking them in place with a glue stick or sticky tape.
- We like using this roller glue because it is easy to use and has less sticky mess!
Craft Projects Using our Free Printable Hua Hua Template
- Adding Dimension: Mount the cut-outs onto a larger piece of construction paper and use other craft materials to embellish it. For example, glitter, craft foam, or tissue paper, to name a few. It’s a perfect activity for art class.
- Laminating: This fun animal craft is still possible for tiny kids who can’t yet use scissors! Use a laminator to laminate the printable and cut out each bat shape, leaving a slight margin around them. Then, add Velcro Dots to the pieces so the Hua Hua can be assembled without cutting or gluing.
- Moveable Panda: Construct Hua Hua using split pins/brads instead of glue to make her moveable.
- Everybody Loves Puppets: Grab some popsicle sticks and the regular-sized free printable to make little puppets for role-playing or storytelling.
- Festive Decorations: Attach several pandas in different poses to some ribbon or string and hang them as bunting. They would make great decorations for a party or to hang around your classroom. Add black paper to the back of each one for a neater finish.
- Panda Mobile: Similar to the previous idea, assemble several pandas and glue them back to back with some ribbon in between. Then, hang them at different lengths on a wire hanger, and you have a cute decoration!
- Educational Tool: Ideal for teaching about pandas, wildlife conservation, Earth Day, or Chinese culture.
- In the Classroom: The large version makes an excellent wall, door, or bulletin board display.
- Roll-A-Panda Game: This idea is based on the classic dice game and is so much fun to play—especially for young children!
- To set up, print, and cut enough panda pieces for each player, assign a number to each piece—for example, Body (1), Ears (2), Arms (3), Legs (4), Bamboo (5), Any Piece (6).
- After rolling the die, the player picks up the corresponding piece to build their panda. If players roll a number for a piece they already have, they skip their turn. The winner is the first player to collect all the parts and assemble them!
