Patriotic USA Wooden Sign

This easy wood craft is fun for both kids and adults, and great to make for 4th of July! Using wood slices, some paint, and some raffia, you can make a patriotic USA wooden sign to hang in your home.

If you’re looking to create something patriotic for your home, then this wooden hanging sign is it! Once you know the technique for making this USA sign, then you’ll be able to make them for all sorts of things – Halloween springs to mind for me!

Craft Supplies

Each letter of the sign is made by painting a wood slice and then joining them together with some raffia.

You will also need acrylic paints – red, white, and blue – as well as a foam brush and a small paintbrush for writing the letters.

Craft Tools

You can buy wood slices with one hole pre-drilled but will need to create a second hole so that each slice can be tied together. You can do this with a craft drill or a woodburning tool.

How do I make this wooden sign?

Step 1 – Drill or burn a second hole into each wood slice – opposite the pre-drilled hole. Of course, if children are making this craft, then drill the holes for them.

Step 2 – Using a foam brush, paint one wood slice each – red, white, and blue and leave to dry.

Step 3 – When the pieces of wood have dried it’s time to paint the letters on:

• white wood piece: red “U”
• red wood piece: blue “S”
• blue wood piece: white “A”

And leave to dry once again.

Step 4 – When fully dry, line the pieces up in order from top to bottom – U, S, A – and tie together with raffia:

• Tie the bottom of the “U” to the top of the “S”
• Tie the bottom of the “S” to the top of the “A”
• Tie a loop to the top of the “U” so that you can hang the wooden sign up.

You could add a raffia tassel to the bottom of the “A” if you like.

And that is your sign complete – easy right?!

Materials

• Blue acrylic paint
• Red acrylic paint
• White acrylic paint
• 3 wood slices
• Raffia

TOOLS

• Small foam brush
• Small paintbrush for writing letters
• A drill or wood burning tool to make a second hole
• Scissors

Instructions

 

• Drill or burn a second hole into each wood slice – opposite the pre-drilled hole.
• Paint one piece of wood red, one white, and the last one blue. Leave to dry.
• When dry, paint on the letters: white wood piece: red “U”, red wood piece: blue “S”, blue wood piece: white “A”. Leave to dry once again.
• When fully dry, line the pieces up in order from top to bottom – U, S, A – and tie together with raffia. Snip off any excess.
• Tie the bottom of the “U” to the top of the “S”
• Tie the bottom of the “S” to the top of the “A”
• Tie a loop to the top of the “U” so that you can hang the wooden sign up.

Notes

Adult supervision may be required. Adult should drill holes into wood slices if kids are making this craft.
