Day 1 – Cook, Craft, Create: December 2012

For day one of Cook, Craft, Create: December 2012 I’ve made a basket of Christmas Countdown Grab Bags. I’ve put them together for my son in lieu of an Advent calendar.

I say you’re never too old to countdown to Christmas…but in the UK, shop bought Advent calendars are samey, full of nasty tasting chocolate and not much fun at all! So this year, after promising myself year after year I would make an Advent calendar for my son, I finally did it :)

I bought a bunch of goodies to go inside each bag – toys, sweets and chocolates. As he grows older it’s harder to pick thing to go inside…for a younger child I think there would be lots of different cheap goodies to put inside each day’s bag. In fact, I saw so many cute things that would have been ideal for him 3 or 4 years ago, but not for a teenager *sad face*

I had some white paper bags to create the grab bags, and I bought some candy cane striped pipe cleaners to tie them up with.

Counting out 24 bags – one for each day on the lead up to December 25th, I then decided on the quickest and easiest way to decorate them…

I started by drawing on each of the days’ dates in felt tip pen, and then, thinking they were a little plain, I decided to add some stickers. Since these will go straight into the rubbish bin, I didn’t want to waste nice decoration!

The next fun part was filling each bag! I secured each bag with a pipe cleaner and then piled them all into a gift basket. I’ve placed the basket of Christmas Countdown Grab Bags on the table in the hallway for him to find the corresponding bag for the day (after school, when he can enjoy his treat!).

I know today is the 1st and you may think it’s too late to make this, but I did this in about an hour, so you can have this all ready for when the kids come home from school!

You could, if you have a little more time, put in things like jokes, riddles, puzzles, word games etc. I wish I had ;) Next year!

I’ve also got lots more Christmas Crafts for Adults for you to try out. Right-click and open a new tab to read next.
