Wise(ish) Words

Okay, so this book is actually aimed at 8 – 16 year olds – but since I’ve not got a gift guide for that age group, and because I actually made this book for myself – a forty (ish) woman, I wanted to include it here! And since you can personalise, it you can actually pick the more grown up of words to use. A gift for all ages!

This book is packed full of smile-inducing wise(ish) words personalised by you. Because your words might just help them make better mistakes. This book feels good to make, great to give, and even better to explore together. It sticks around on their bookshelf for years. As they grow, they’ll find new favourite pages – and they’ll never forget the person who made it.

You may have already read my Gift Guide for Men, where I included The Book of Everything. Well this book, Wise(ish) Words is from the same company! Which means, once again, that you can personalise it, and I had just as much fun making this as I was making it for me, from me! Why? Because sometimes I need some wise(ish) words in my ear, even at 40(ish)!

There are three different graphic themes to this book – original, grafitti, and collage. they have their own distinctive styles, and I had a tough time deciding which one I wanted! I went with original in the end. You fill in the blanks for who the book is for and from, and you can use the slider bar to decide if you want the words contained within, to be heartfelt, cheeky, or somewhere between. By default it was in the middle, which is exactly where I left it.

With that all taken care of it is time to make the book. Each page is a double-page spread, and you can edit the wise(ish) words on every page. There are three pre-filled options, or you could add your own words. Being able to do this is fabulous, especially if making for your own child/ren or other family member.

On some pages I knew exactly which words to pick, and on others, I did have a hard time deciding! With quotes like “If you stumble, do a little twirls and make it a dance” or “Be you. You’re the best possible person for the job.” or simply “Listen“.

I made this book for myself because sometimes I just need wise(ish) words to encourage me, or lift me up, or just inspire me. So this book will always be near by so that I can pick it up and read through when the situations arises!

Sloe Gin*

The Lakes Gin the only gin with true Cumbrian provenance. Produced with crystal clear water from the River Derwent and a selection of Cumbrian botanicals, The Lakes Gin is truly a gin of distinction.

Sloes are carefully combined with an eclectic mix of 15 carefully selected botanicals, including Cumbrian juniper, and six others which are native to the Lake District National Park.

Now, I’m not going to pretend that I didn’t choose this particular gin because of the colour of the bottle, because I did exactly that. BUT, in my defence, I’ve also never tried sloe gin before! Elderflower Gin, and Damson Gin are also available. ABV: 25%

The Lakes’ website suggests to drink it straight over ice, or adding a drop to prosecco. I tried it neat and it had a lovely flavour – and not at all what I was expecting. Gin has a very distinctive flavour (and is a spirit that I am partial to, with tonic and a slice of lemon) and I can’t say that sloe gin tastes anything like gin at all. Maybe that’s how it’s supposed to be, I don’t know! But that all said, it was a lovely tasting liqueur, and when I added some lemonade, it was like a grown-ups fizzy pop!

Jean Paul Gaultier fragrances have come in busts (and nothing else) for 20 years now. If you’re wondering where the legs went, here they are! Scandal, it’s a super-chic glass bottle. The juice is a feminine, intimate, powdery pink.

During the day, it’s a delicious fresh honey with the wonderful scent of gardenia and blood orange. At night, it’s a sensual and scandalous honey combined with patchouli: an addiction that’s just so Jean Paul Gaultier.

The 30ml bottle has a legs charm attached; on the 50ml and 80ml bottles the bottle top are the legs. I think a scandal has been caused by the change in bottle style alone!

I wore Jean Paul Gaultier on my wedding day and the scent will be forever in my memory from that day. The scent of Scandal is very different from the classique. The dark praline was especially good in my opinion, and while I’m not a fan of coffee flavoured chocolates (I am weird, I love coffee, and I love chocolate, just not together!) I actually enjoyed the latte macchiato flavoured chocs.
