If, like us, you are a Star Wars fan, then you will no doubt be celebrating Unofficial Star Wars Day on May the Fourth!

We always try to watch one or two of the Star Wars movies, and if we’re being extra fancy and have more time on our hands we’ll have a full on movie night!

Star Wars Balloons

Setting up a Star Wars Movie Night at home couldn’t be simpler, stream your favorite movies from the saga (or put a DVD in!), pop some popcorn, turn off the lights, and turn the sound up!

Adding some decor makes everything a little bit more fun – and that’s where these balloon Star Wars characters come in!

I actually made these balloons back in 2016 as one of my projects as a Celebration Club Ambassador for Balloon Time, but since today is May the Fourth, and because we are totally watching The Rise of Skywalker tonight I wanted to reshare this!

I turned balloons into a Stormtrooper, Chewbacca, C-3PO, Yoda, and Darth Vader. But think of all the other characters you could have a go at making!

You will need a little bit of drawing ability to make these balloons, but I’ve provided my drawings as a free printable template to give you a bit of a guide.

(I will fess up and say that when I drew out the Storm Trooper and Darth Vader to scan, they came out a bit lop-sided… but you’ll get the idea!)

Supplies to Make Star Wars Balloons

You will need…

Latex Balloon Tips!

  • Inflate to the fullest they can go so that they float properly (unlike my C-3PO!)
  • Make these as close as possible to the time of the event as latex balloons do not have the lasting power that foil/mylar balloons have.
  • A 9″ balloon will float for around 5-7 hours.
  • You can extend the float time of latex balloons by using a product called Hi-Float which claims to make balloons float for 25x longer.

Inflating balloons with a Balloon Time tank is easy as 1, 2, 3…

  1. Open the valve by turning it four times, counter-clockwise.
  2. Slide a balloon onto the black nozzle.
  3. Holding the balloon in place, push down to release the helium into the balloon. Remove and tie into a knot. Attach ribbon if required.

More Balloon Decorating Ideas

Here are some of my other balloon decorating ideas for parties and celebrations!

The standard helium kit from Balloon Time comes with a pack of 30 colourful (9″) balloons, ribbon, and of course, the tank, which can fill up to 30, 9″ latex balloons, 16, 11″ latex balloons, or 16, 11″ foil/Mylar balloons. The tank is recyclable, so just take it down to your local recycling center when it’s empty.

How Do I Make Star Wars Balloons?

I’m so glad you asked – read the card below! You can print the how-to card out – don’t worry, the images don’t print!

Star Wars Balloons

Yield: A Saga of Star Wars Balloons!
Active Time: 30 minutes
Total Time: 30 minutes

Instructions

  1. Inflate balloons
  2. Using the character templates as a guide draw the characters onto the balloons using a marker pen. If you like you could cut the templates to form a stencil and trace around them instead. Take your time drawing the characters out as you only have one shot at getting it right!

TIP! Start drawing from the middle and work outwards to help you balance features more evenly. And even if your drawings do go a bit wonky (which mine definitely did!) it doesn't matter - the effect is still there.
  3. Use a black marker and a brown or gold balloon for Chewie

  4. Use a black marker and a gold balloon for C-3PO

    Star Wars Balloons - C3-PO
  5. Use a black marker and green balloon for Yoda. Make Yoda's ears from lightweight paper - cut the ear shape and draw in the details. Stick in place with sticky tape at the back of the ears.

  6. Use a silver marker and a black balloon for Darth Vader

  7. Use a black marker and a white balloon for a Stormtrooper

  8. Tie ribbon to each balloon to the length you want the balloons to float and add some balloon weights if you have them or have them free-floating.
