I made some tropical themed cupcakes for a friend’s daughter’s 5th birthday a few weeks ago, and immediately knew I wanted to use my Cricut Explore to make wrappers and toppers to decorate them with. I’ve been making my own printables for years now, and the amazing cutting machine takes that to the next level – saving me all that time cutting things out by hand!
I made 40 vanilla cupcakes (here’s my tried and trusted cupcake recipe!) and decorated with a swirl of vanilla buttercream and lots of brightly coloured tropical sprinkles! Who doesn’t love sprinkles on a cupcake?!
Using brightly coloured card, I chose several designs from the Cricut Design Space – 5 different wrappers and 5 different toppers. I adjusted the size of the wrappers to 9 inches, which is just the right size for my cupcakes.
I simply searched a few keywords – tropical, cupcake wrappers, cupcake toppers and was greeted with lots of different choices. I picked some of my favourites and got cutting! There is something quite satisfying about watching the Cricut Explore do its cutting thang, and even more satisfying is peeling off the design and scraping off the leftover pieces of card!
Once the wrappers are cut, it’s a simple as folding them around and inserting the tab into the pre-cut slot. To assemble the toppers a little bit more work is involved. For best results, I use a spray glue, as some of the pieces can be quite fiddly. Once dried I used a glue dot on the back to secure a cocktail stick in place, and then covered that with a bit of excess card to cover the glue.
You don’t even have to be a whizz at making cupcakes to decorate them using the Cricut Explore – you could even buy them ready made from the shops and jazz them up with your own custom made wrappers and toppers!
The Cricut Explore is available in the UK and you can buy it online now!
