Day 8 – Cook, Craft, Create: December 2012

For day 8 of Cook, Craft, Create: December: 2012 I’ve crocheted a scarf…a very easy, two stitch, beginners scarf that could be stitched quite quickly :) I plan on giving it as a gift!

I taught myself how to crochet by following tutorial videos on YouTube…there are lots out there! I am going to be providing some step-by-step photographs here, but if you are new to crochet, I highly recommend YouTube (or other video service!) for learning how things work – I personally like to see someone doing the skill so I can copy as I go along. I feel you get so much more than from still photographs! But, my photos are and I hope that they help you!

I find crochet a lot easier than knitting, and I find it quite relaxing to make a scarf since you just keep repeating yourself and don’t have to think too hard whilst stitching!

To make my simple crochet scarf, I used a 100g ball of wool and a 5.50mm crochet hook. I used two stitches – double crochet (dc), and double treble (dtr).

I used a multi-coloured wool which I love using! No worrying about switching colours part way through, and makes for a pattern all on its own – I made this scarf below last year with a multi-coloured wool – I love it!

Please be aware that there are differences between the name of stitches and hook sizes in the UK and the USA. Here is a chart to show you the hook size conversion. And to help with the stitches, this conversion chart will help you. In my pattern, I used UK stitches.

I started off by chaining 26 stitches. I didn’t worry about tension when making my scarf, I worry when I have to worry about tension! I have no clue about that :P

With my 26 stitches chained, I then double crocheted back along the row, chained a stitch and turned to repeat with more double crochet, and then repeated once more to give three rows of this stitch.

To do a double crochet, you put your hook through the chain, wrap your wool around the hook once, pull back through the loop, so you have two loops on your hook. Put the hook back through the chain, wool over and then pull back through the two loops on your hook.

If you are brand, brand new to crochet, please hit up some video tutorials on YouTube – they are a great
help – and were to me when I taught myself how to crochet!

These are my attempt at a picture tutorial!

Repeat the process in the next chain along

I then decided to add a stitch with some height, and went with double treble. When you turn, you have to add chains to make up the first stitch. So I chained 4 and turned, then started with the double treble. You wrap the wool around the hook twice, before placing it into the next (5th from hook on the first stitch) stitch along, wool over and pull through, you will have four loops on your hook. Wool over and pull through the first two loops (you are left with 3 loops on). Wool over and pull through the next two loops (you are left with 2 loops on hook). Wool over for the last time and pull through the final two loops and you are left with the one loop on your hook.

Easier done that said (and written!) I had to just do that stitch to make sure I wrote it out correctly for you!

Here is that stitch in picture form….(again, hit up YouTube if you need to!)

Back to the start with one loop on your hook. Repeat this to the end of the row

I quite happily sat and repeated the pattern of 3 rows of double crochet and one row of double treble until I ran out of wool! For the final stitch I just pulled the remaining wool all the way through – no need for a final chain as not turning the piece. I then knotted it and wove back into the stitches before cutting off.

The pattern repeated twice – 3 rows of dc and 1 row of dtr

The scarf ended up at around 50 inches by the time I finished – if you want a longer scarf, you could use another half a ball of wool, or even double it for an ultra long scarf!! Reducing the number of initial chains to make a narrower scarf would also increase the length.

I’m more than happy with the way the scarf turned out, and I hope that the receiver of this scarf will be too!

Once you grasp the basic concept of wrapping yarn/wool over, pulling through loops and chaining; crochet really is quite simple, and if you’re looking to try out some crochet, this scarf would be an ideal place to start!

I am no crochet expert by any means, I only taught myself about 18 months ago how to crochet! So I hope that my instructions are clear enough, but if not (and no offence taken if not!), a search online will bring up so many tutorials, you’ll be crocheting in no time!

Here is the pattern…I hope you can follow it – I’ve never written a crochet pattern before!!

Simple Crochet Scarf

To begin: Chain 26
Row 1: dc into 2nd ch from hook, dc into next 24 ch (25 dc). ch 2, turn
Row 2-3: repeat row 1
Row 4: dc into 2nd ch from hook, dc into next 24 ch (25 dc). ch 4, turn
Row 5: dtr into 5th ch from hook, dtr into next 24 ch (25 dtr). ch 2, turn

Repeat rows 2 – 5 until you run out of wool!

Last Row: Don’t ch 1 at the end of the row as you won’t be turning – leave enough wool to tie off and secure by weaving back into the stitches.

There is no tension to worry about, and my scarf ended at 50 inches (127cm)
