What are Mandalas?

A mandala is a geometric configuration of symbols with a very different application. In modern, typically American and European use, “mandala” has become a generic term for any circle ornament which can be used as a relaxing tool or in art therapy. In various spiritual traditions, mandalas may be employed for focusing attention of practitioners and adepts, as a spiritual guidance tool, for establishing a sacred space and as an aid to meditation and trance induction.

Wikipedia

Mandala is a Sanskrit word that means “circle”. Generally, they have a central starting point and patterns, symbols and forms radiate outwards from there. Mandalas can be filled with all kinds of patterns from geometric shapes to organic drawings like flowers and leaves.

I LOVE drawing and coloring in mandalas. It is such a relaxing thing to do, and I can honestly say that when I create them I do feel like I am in a meditative state.

If you are suffering from stress and anxiety, then grab some coloring pencils or marker pens and print these mandala designs to color in and allow your mind to focus on your colour choices, freeing it from your woes for a little while.

As I mentioned in my free printable adult coloring pages post there are lots of health benefits to coloring in including:

  • Reducing stress and anxiety
  • Improving motor and vision skills
  • Helping to improve sleep
  • Improving focus

Ultimately, coloring in is GOOD FOR YOU! So try and dedicate a little time to it to help calm your soul and allow you to become a little more creative.

Coloring In Mandalas

I mentioned that I love to draw mandalas, and if you want to have a go yourself, I explain how to do it in my post about how I drew a mandala on a pumpkin!

However, if you feel that creating your own is too tricky, then I’ve done that part and created 6 different designs for you to colour in.

There is a bonus extra design that has all blank sections for you to add patterns to. Try adding lines in different directions, swirls, circles, dots, and anything else you feel inspired to do.

You don’t have to be a great artist to color mandalas in, you just need a pack of coloring pencils or marker pens – my favorites are Crayola Supertips, and add color to the design in whatever fashion you like.

You could use good old-fashion crayons or even paints if you prefer – your coloring book/page is your personal art piece – use the materials that you enjoy using.

Pick two or three colors and repeat them, or go monochromatic and use different shades of the same color. Or use ALL the colors!

I’ve included examples of digitally colored mandalas that I did to give you some inspiration, but they’re not included in the printable mandala set.

Grab the free printable downloads further down this page – they are surrounded by a purple box.
