Build A Cow!

I bet if you ask someone to draw a cow they’ll more often than not they’ll draw one with black spots. This black and white breed of cow is called Holstein-Freesian* and are a common sight on farms. They’re one of five of the most common dairy cows, and these beauties are popular with dairy farmers because they produce an abundance of milk!

*They originated from the Dutch provinces of North Holland and Friesland, and Schleswig-Holstein in Northern Germany. In the US they’re called Holstein cows, in the UK and Ireland they’re known as Freesians. (Just to confuse us all!) It is the most widespread cattle in the world.

The build-a-cow printable helps children with their cutting and pasting skills, as well as the opportunity to get creative with other materials too – like sticking on pieces of fur fabric, or adding glitter!

My build an animal series started with Rudy the Rooster and many other animals (and characters) have followed since! You will find all of my “Build-A-Character” printables at the end of the post.

The free printable paper craft is really fun – not just for kids, but for adults too! I love constructing the buildable characters when I have to photograph them for my blog! Sadly, my printer is out of ink, but I will update this post with photos of the printed cow and bull when I can.

Introducing Clarabelle & Chuck!

If you are a regular on my blog you’ll notice that my buildable characters have a cute chubby style, and if they are animals they are anthropomorphic, which basically means that they have human traits – like standing on two legs instead of four.

I’ve been receiving requests to make a printable cow to build so to make up for the time it’s taken me to make this, I decided to give you two free printables in one!

You’ll get Clarabelle the Dairy Cow, and Chuck the Dairy Bull!

I’ve created two sizes for Clarabelle the Dairy Cow and Chuck the Dairy Bull: Regular size, which is what you see at the top of the page (Clarabelle at the top, and Chuck is below), with all of the pieces one sheet of paper; and Large size with the pieces spread over several sheets.

The printables for both the bull and cow templates are in one document.

As with [most of] my free printables, they are available in two paper sizes – A4 and US Letter (8.5″ x 11″) – download the size most suitable for your printer.

The regular size printable is for children that are more skilled at cutting. The large size should be a lot easier for younger children. Or you could cut them out for them. Of course, you know your children, so will know what suits them best!

You could stick pieces together with a glue stick, or sticky tape. I like using this roller glue as it is so easy to use and less sticky mess!

You could mount it onto a larger piece of paper and use other craft materials to embellish it – furry material, craft foam, or tissue paper, for example.

You could use a laminator and laminate the pieces and use them over and over again.

Most of all, just have fun with this printable!

Download your chosen printable from the list further down the page (they’re surrounded by a purple box), and print onto thick paper or thin card. Cut the pieces out, then build a cow!

Included in this printable paper cow craft are the following pieces:

  • Head/body with eyes and spots pattern (x2)
  • Muzzle with nostrils and mouth (x2)
  • Arms (x4)
  • Feet (x4)
  • Horns (x2)
  • Udders (x1 for Clarabelle)
  • Belly (x1 for Chuck)
