100 Jello Shots Recipes

Jello shots—also known as jelly shots (UK) and jello shooters—are a good choice for all sorts of parties and events.

They’re iconic, colorful, and delicious – what’s not to love?

And they are so easy to make—the hardest part is deciding which liquor and flavor of gelatin to use!

Let’s begin with a simple recipe to create the foundation of your jello shot adventure.

These recipes are intended for adults of the legal drinking age in your country of residence.
Please drink responsibly. Do not drink and drive.

Ingredients & Equipment

You will need just a few simple ingredients to make jello shots:

  • A package of regular jello (or sugar-free jello if that concerns you) in any flavor you like.
  • You can also use unflavored gelatin if you don’t want fruity jello flavors in your shots. You can add food coloring to gelatin to add a pop of color.
  • You can use agar-agar, a plant-based gelatin made from red algae, for vegans or those that do not want to use gelatin. We have included a recipe for vegan jello shots in our list.
  • Hot (boiling) water to dissolve the Jell-O
  • Liquor of choice—typically vodka or white rum—but you can use [probably] any liquor you like!

You will also need the following items to make and assemble your shots:

  • Mixing bowl or a large measuring cup/jug. We prefer the latter as the lip/spout makes pouring the liquid easier.
  • Spoon or whisk to combine the jello, water, and liquor.
  • Plastic shot glasses – the type you use will depend on your preference and how many you make.
  • Shot cups with lids are most often used for jelly shots. They come in various sizes, but 1-oz or 2-oz are typical.
  • They are handy because you can stack them easily in the refrigerator, especially when making them for large crowds. Check out Upscale Drinks to learn how to make gelatin shots in batches of 100 or more!
  • A serving tray or baking sheet will make moving your filled shot cups to the fridge (and back out again) much easier than doing it one by one!

How To Make Basic Jello Shots

  • Add a small box of jello (3 oz) to a large measuring cup/jug.
  • Add 1 cup of boiling water and whisk or stir to dissolve.
  • Add ½ cup cold water and ½ cup vodka (or other liquor).
  • Whisk or stir to combine.
  • Place 10-14 (2-oz) plastic shot cups onto a tray.
  • The amount of shots you make will depend on how much you fill the cups.
  • Pour the jello mixture into the cups and place in the refrigerator for a minimum of 4 hours to set.
  • If transporting the jelly shots or you need more room in the fridge, add cup lids and stack.

How Much Alcohol Is Used In Jello Shots?

As you’ll see in our list of Jell-O shot recipes, there are lots of different ways to make them, but a good rule of thumb is to follow the Jello package directions and replace half of the cold water in the recipe with a half cup of hard liquor of your choice.

However, feel free to adjust the alcohol content based on personal preference. Remember not to use more liquid than the box recommends, as the jello may not be set properly. If you have time to experiment, use additional, unflavored gelatin.

The amount of liquid used may differ from brand to brand and country to country:

  • In the US, a 3-oz package of Jell-O brand uses 1 cup of boiling water and 1 cup of cold water making a pint of jello.
  • In the UK, a pack of Hartley’s jelly also makes one pint of jelly. Add half a pint (285ml) of hot water and another half of cold water to make jelly.
  • To confuse us all, the UK pint is 20 ounces, and the US pint is 16 ounces!
  • And another thing to note, UK jelly isn’t quite as bright as our US cousins, so you can always add a drop or two of food coloring to enhance the vibrancy.
  • If you are making your own flavor combination, follow the liquid quantities on the package.
  • If you are following a recipe, use their recommended cups of liquid.
