Ginger, Chilli & Soy Barbecued Tofu
Home » COOK » Recipes » Barbecue & Grilling »I had a block of tofu to use for my vegetarian barbecue recently, and decided to marinade it and see what happens when we threw it over the coals!
I made a marinade with soy sauce, garlic, ginger and chilli. You need to leave tofu to marinate for a good few hours – at least 4 or 5 so that the flavour can penetrate all the way through.
I mixed all the ingredients together in a bowl and then cut the tofu into thick slices before patting it dry with a paper towel. It was then dipped in the marinade and placed in the fridge for a few hours.
Once ready to cook, it went straight on the hot grill (which we always brush with some oil to prevent sticking) and it cooked very nicely over the coals. The trouble I find with tofu is that it never seems to flavour all the way through…but, these tofu steaks were good and I think would be nice with a noodle salad!
- 1 block of tofu, cut into thick slices (about ¾cm)
- 2 tbps dark soy sauce
- 1 tsp ground ginger
- 1 tsp garlic salt
- ½tsp dried chilli flakes
- Place the soy sauce, ginger, garlic and chilli in a bowl and mix together.
- Dip the slices of tofu into the marinade and cover on all sides before putting in the fridge for 4 or 5 hours.
- To cook, place over hot coals until heated through.

Really like the sound of this. I love tofu, but I’ve never tried it on a barbecue. Will give this a go.

This looks a good marinade to make tofu more interesting. Never thought about putting it on the barbecue, but your photos look good!

You really do have to pack a punch into tofu! I think this may have worked out better if I’d crumb coated it too!
