We Need A Bigger Fridge

I love entertaining, if you know me, you know that is a fact! You know that I love nothing better than organising parties and get togethers with the family (of which there are over 10 of us when we are all together, even more when we add friends to the mix!) and preparing either a meal or a buffet for us all. What I don’t love is the lack of space in my fridge to keep everything in whilst I’m preparing dishes. There have been several occasions over the years where I have had to play Tetris with the items in the fridge to make sure I can fit everything in!

You see, I like to be mega organised when catering for large numbers, preparing as much as possible in advance so I don’t have to be stressing out too much on the day, or even moments before people turn up. That means I prepare ingredients if they need last minute cooking, or make dishes and refrigerate to heat up when required, or just put together salads and not have to worry about them making them on the day. All I have to worry about is taking everything out of the fridge!

Every time we replace our fridge, I look for a bigger one, and whilst our current fridge is of a decent size, when it really came to being put to the test (Christmas!) it failed. I’ve been checking out deals online at Tesco Direct as I’ve wanted an American Fridge Freezer for a long time. My parents have had one for years now, and I’m amazed at how much they can fit in the fridge when they need to!

The only downside that I can see to an American style fridge freezer is size – they are generally twice the width of our standard British fridges, and in our old house there just wasn’t the room. In this house there is – so when our kitchen refurbishment takes place (I’m crossing my fingers in time for Christmas) I will definitely be investing in one of these huge appliances!

Just recently, I’ve been noticing that there is a different style of fridge/freezer to the usual side by side that was common for the American ones, and that is drawers under the fridge for freezer space. I love this idea, and when I watch my American cookery programmes, I’m envious. I would hazard a guess that this will be the style that we go for.

If it is possible to be in love with the layout of a refrigerator, this one below is it! I love all the room in sides for drinks, I love that there looks to be optional runners for additional shelving (just behind the two tier cake) and if those watermelons are anything to go by, this looks, on first glance to be of a really big size.

Having lived without a water/ice machine in a fridge for all of my adult life, having one at the front of the fridge is not too much of a big deal for me. Plus the unit to make the ice takes up valuable storage space!

American Style Fridge Freezers

When looking for a fridge I consider the following:

  • Size – will the fridge/freezer fit in the space we have available?
  • Storage – does it have enough shelving/drawer space for our short term and temporary needs (i.e., party time!)
  • Energy rating – we like to be as kind to the environment as we can
  • Colour – white goods aren’t always white any more! I would love a, you’ve guessed it, purple fridge! But I would choose a silver or black finish over white any day.
  • Price – this of course can be a big factor for many, we all want to get good value for our pound!

Do you have an American style fridge/freezer? What do you/don’t you like about it?
