Wooden Spoon Uncle Sam Craft

Make this adorable Uncle Sam from a wooden spoon, craft stick, paint, and foam—an easy patriotic project for kids to create on a budget.

Instructions
 

  • Place the thin craft stick two inches (5cm) down from the top of the spatula, and draw a line with a pencil.

  • Download and print the free template and use it as a guide. Paint the top third of the wooden spoon with white acrylic craft paint. Let dry and apply a second coat, if necessary.
  • Using a small flat paintbrush, add vertical stripes with red acrylic craft paint on top of the white layer. Let dry and apply a second coat, if necessary.

  • Basecoat the regular craft stick with blue acrylic craft paint. Let dry and apply a second coat, if necessary.

  • Attach the blue craft stick to the painted edge of the wooden spoon spatula with a glue gun and glue sticks. This becomes the hat brim. Trim ½” from each end of the craft stick with scissors.
  • Paint the handle of the wooden spoon spatula with blue acrylic craft paint. Let dry and apply a second coat, if necessary.

  • Attach two googly eyes to Uncle Sam’s face with a glue gun and glue sticks. Create cheeks by dipping a new pencil eraser in pink acrylic craft paint and dotting on the right and left side under the eyes.

  • Attach three red buttons to the handle of the wooden spoon spatula with a glue gun and glue sticks.
  • Trace the beard and mustache from the free template onto white craft foam with a pencil, and then cut out with scissors. Attach the beard and then the mustache with a glue gun and glue sticks. Trim the rounded end from a regular craft stick with scissors and glue just under the googly eyes as Uncle Sam’s nose.

  • Trace the star from the free template onto the back of the silver glitter cardstock with a pencil, and then cut out with scissors. Attach to the hat with a glue gun and glue sticks. To finish, embellish the star with a self-adhesive clear rhinestone.

Handy Tips & More Ideas

  • Hot Glue Alternatives: If you don’t have a glue gun, you can use liquid craft glue, but you will have to wait longer for it to dry.
