Ingredients

  • 1 cup fresh blackberries
  • 1 cup fresh raspberries
  • 1 lime juice and zest, preferably organic
  • ¼ cup powdered sugar icing sugar
  • 3 large eggs
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • ½ cup whole milk
  • ½ tsp ground cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp ground nutmeg
  • 8 slices sourdough bread slightly hardened*

To Serve

  • Additional powdered sugar and/or real maple syrup.
  • If desired offer bacon or sausage links on the side.

Instructions

  • Combine the fresh berries, lime juice, lime zest, and powdered sugar in a large bowl and gently toss to combine. Set aside.

    Fresh Berry Mixture
  • Prepared Fresh Berries
  • Place the eggs, vanilla extract, milk, cinnamon, and nutmeg into a medium bowl and stir to combine.

    Egg Mixture
  • Whisked Egg Mixture
  • Soak the prepared bread in the egg mixture for 4-5 seconds per side, then transfer to a rimmed bowl. Set aside.

    Soaking Bread in Egg Mixture
  • Heat a large non-stick skillet over medium heat. Add two or three slices of the soaked bread to the hot skillet and cook for 3-4 minutes per side, or until golden brown on each side. Remove from the skillet and repeat this process with the remaining slices of bread.

  • Any combination of fresh berries can be used for this recipe, including strawberries and blueberries, as well as the blackberries and raspberries shown here.
