- 2 cups milk dairy or non-dairy
- ½ cup pumpkin purée canned or homemade
- 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar or to taste
- ½ teaspoon pumpkin pie spice
- ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
- Whipped cream for topping
- Pumpkin pie spice or chocolate shavings optional, for garnish
Pour the milk into a medium saucepan and warm over medium heat until hot but not boiling.
Add the pumpkin purée, cocoa powder, brown sugar, pumpkin pie spice, and vanilla extract.
Whisk until smooth and well combined. Continue heating gently until hot, without allowing the mixture to boil.
Pour the hot chocolate into mugs.
Top generously with whipped cream and garnish with extra pumpkin pie spice or chocolate shavings, if desired. Serve immediately and enjoy!
Tips
- Keep the heat at medium or lower, and don't let the hot chocolate boil.
- Adjust the brown sugar and pumpkin pie spice to suit your taste.
- Whisk the mixture well so the pumpkin purée and cocoa powder are fully incorporated into the milk.
Substitutions
- Use your favorite dairy or non-dairy milk, such as almond or oat milk.
- If you don't have pumpkin pie spice, use a combination of ground cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice.
