Grinch Hot Mint Chocolate Bombs

The full ingredients list and instructions are found in the printable recipe card at the end of this post. I highly recommend reading the blog post all the way through so that you don’t miss any tips or substitution suggestions; to ensure that you have all the ingredients and equipment required, and to understand the steps and timings involved.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you can’t have helped but notice the newest food trend around – hot chocolate bombs! This is a trend that I can happily get on board with and this recipe is me throwing my hat into the ring!

I can see why they are super popular. They taste delicious, they are fun and actually quite simple to make, and can be made in all sorts of flavors too.

The only trouble I foresee, because of their popularity right now, is getting your hands on a round silicone mold to make these green chocolate bombs… But I’ve got a solution for that in equipment section!

But first…

What is a Hot Chocolate Bomb?

Essentially, it is a spherical chocolate shell that has been filled with hot cocoa powder, as well as other goodies like mini marshmallows, sprinkles, chocolate chips, or any other topping you would sprinkle over hot chocolate!

To turn the chocolate bomb into a hot chocolate drink, simply place it into a mug or heatproof glass and pour steaming milk over it. The outer shell will melt away to reveal the filling inside, which you stir up with a spoon to mix everything together.

In our Grinch-themed bombs, we’ve used green melting chocolate to create the outer shell, and filled it with mint chocolate cocoa powder, sprinkles (including heart-shaped ones of course!), and mini marshmallows.

Once sealed up, the outside is decorated with more green chocolate and topped with a red candy heart. When you drink this yummy concoction, you will feel so warm and fuzzy your heart might grow three sizes* too, just like Grinch’s heart!

*But not actually, I’m just paraphrasing the famous thing that happened to The Grinch in the book and movies!

Ingredients & Equipment Used In This Recipe

The full list of ingredients with measurements is found in the recipe card at the end of this post.

For your convenience, any specialized or notable ingredients and equipment needed for this recipe have been listed below and linked to Amazon if available online.

  • Green Candy Melting Chocolatewe used Wilton Dark Green, but you could use lime green for a more Grinch-y color.
  • Mint Chocolate Hot Cocoa Powder
  • Nerdy Nummies 8-Bit Red Candy Hearts – if you can’t find these, you can use any red candy heart, or jumbo heart sprinkles that you like.
  • Mini Marshmallows
  • Sprinklesuse any bright and colorful ones you like, make sure they contain hearts! The one linked is called “Who Hash” and is a Grinch-themed sprinkle mix, but you could easily mix up your own!
  • Disposable Piping Bagto drizzle melted candy over the bombs. Or you could use a plastic food bag with the corner snipped off instead.
  • Cookie Sheet(or plate, or tray) lined with wax paper to place the bombs on while they set.
  • Sphere/Round Silicone Mold – ideally you want to have two so that you can make more Grinch hot choc bombs at one time! They come in different sizes, ours were made using a mold that is about 2.5″/70mm, but you could make them a little smaller if you wanted to (or already have a mold at home).

What if I can’t get a round mold?

I mentioned that since making hot chocolate bombs are quite the fad right now, getting a spherical mold might be tricky. No one wrote a law that said you MUST make these chocolate bombs round.

You could make them in all kinds of shapes!

As long as they will fit in your mug you could use any shape you like. Why not try hearts, stars, ovals, or even squares! The method to make them will be exactly the same!

Recipes on The Purple Pumpkin Blog use both cup measurements and/or weighted measurements. American cups and kitchen food scales are handy pieces of equipment to have in your kitchen as it means you’ll be able to make all of the different recipes on my blog! I try to give American, imperial, and metric measurements in my recipes. You can mix cup measurements with weighted measurements, but never imperial (pounds, ounces, pints, etc.,) with metric (kilograms, grams, litres, etc.,).

Melting Tips for Candy Melts

You can melt candy melts/candy wafers in the microwave or a double boiler, or if you plan on making lots of candy covered treats in the future, I recommend investing in a Wilton candy melting pot as treat-making life is then so much easier!

Try this PME one if you’re in the UK, as the Wilton one is not available on Amazon.co.uk.

If you use the Wilton Candy Melting Pot, you can check out Wilton’s demo video on YouTube which is really helpful. They also give tips on how to melt candy melts in the microwave, as well as using the double boiler method.

The two most important things are:

  1. Do not overheat – use an even melting temperature
  2. Do not add water – it makes the candy seize up and become unusable. Make sure the equipment used is completely dry, and avoid using utensils that retain moisture like a wooden spoon.

If you find that the candy is too thick, add vegetable shortening or (solid) coconut oil in 1 teaspoon increments, up to 1 tablespoon, and stir well.

Another reminder – do not add water. The very first time I used candy melts I managed to get water in the bowl and it was ruined. Learn from my mistakes! Additionally, do not use vegetable oil, butter, milk, or any other liquids as this will also make the candy seize up.

If you are using your microwave, test melt a small amount of candy melts first, to see how it works. You may need to adjust the temperature and time to suit your machine. Heat in 15-30 second increments, stirring the candy melts each time. They may not look melted, but they might have started melting from the inside. Stirring helps to distribute the heat.

Grinch Mint Hot Chocolate Cocoa Bombs Recipe

Grinch Hot Mint Chocolate Bombs

Yield: 8-10
Prep Time: 1 hour
Total Time: 1 hour

Grinch fans everywhere are going to LOVE these Grinch Hot Mint Chocolate Bombs! Using just five ingredients, you can join in the hot choc bomb craze that has taken over the world!

Ingredients

  • 1lb/450g dark green candy melting chocolate
  • 2 cups mint chocolate hot cocoa powder
  • 8-10 Nerdy Nummies Red Candy Hearts (or other red heart-shaped candy)
  • 2 cups mini marshmallows
  • 1 cup bright and colorful sprinkles mix that includes hearts
  • 2 Silicone Sphere Molds*

Instructions

  1. To prepare your molds, use a paper towel or clean kitchen cloth to wipe the inside of the silicone molds. This will allow your chocolate sphere to have a shiny coat on it.
  2. To make removing the chocolate shells from the mold easier, you can cut each section of the mold so you have individual pieces. This can give you more control, but is 100% optional and a personal choice! The photo below is of another chocolate bomb, but demonstrates what I mean! Chocolate Bomb Mold
  3. Line a cookie sheet (or tray or plate) with wax paper and set aside.
  4. Pour the green candy melts into a microwave-safe bowl, and microwave for 45-second intervals, stirring each time until the candy is completely melted and smooth. Alternatively, follow the directions on the package.
  5. Spoon about 1 to 2 tablespoons of the melted candy into one of the mold cavities.
  6. Carefully swirl the melted candy to completely coat the inside of the mold,
  7. Lightly shake the extra candy back into the bowl.
  8. Repeat steps 5-7 for as many chocolate bombs as you are making. You will need two halves per bomb.
  9. Place the coated molds into the fridge for 5-10 minutes to set.
  10. Remove from the fridge and gently peel the silicone mold back away from the hardened candy and carefully place it onto your prepared cookie sheet.
  11. Repeat step 10 with the rest of the set molded candy.
  12. To build the Grinch chocolate bombs, place about 1 tablespoon of mint chocolate hot cocoa powder into one candy half-shell.
  13. Pour in some sprinkles - about ½ teaspoon.
  14. Sprinkle in a few mini marshmallows.
  15. Add a heart-shaped sprinkle on top. It'll get mixed in, but you'll know it's there! blank
  16. There are two methods for attaching the top candy half-shell to the bottom one:
  17. Method 1: Melt some green candy melts and pour into a disposable piping bag, then pipe it around the edge of the bottom shell. Carefully place the top shell onto the bottom one and gently hold them in place for 30-60 seconds to allow the piped candy to harden and "glue" the pieces together.
  18. Method 2: Warm up a shallow frying pan on the stove. Place a piece of wax paper into the pan, and holding the top half-shell, rub gently on the wax paper until the edges start to melt a bit. Use this to then stick the top to the bottom, holding together until set.
  19. Whichever method you use, carefully pick up the bomb and make sure that there are no gaps around the middle of the green chocolate bomb. blank
  20. When all of your candy shells have been filled and stuck together, melt some more candy in the microwave and transfer to a disposable piping bag.
  21. Drizzle the candy melts over the bomb and place a red candy heart in the center.
  22. Leave to set for about 10 minutes.Grinch Mint Hot Chocolate Cocoa Bombs Recipe
  23. Enjoy and Happy Grinchmas!

*You can make whatever size (and even shape!) you like as long as they fit inside your mug! We used a mold approx 2.5"/70mm - you can make them slightly bigger or smaller.
