Homemade Chocolate Covered Pretzels

The thought of a salty snack covered with chocolate might sound weird, but the whole sweet salty thing you get from eating chocolate covered pretzels is a taste sensation!

Knowing that I wanted to try and make some homemade gifts at Christmas, chocolate covered pretzels popped into my head, and one afternoon I decided to get makin’.

I had bought a packet of pretzels from the Poundshop a few weeks earlier – they had the stick kind inside as well as the knot variety. I was pleased as it meant I’d be able to try and make chocolate covered, sprinkle covered pretzel sticks like I had seen when on holiday in Orlando, Florida. They sold them in Goofy’s Candy Co. in Downtown Disney and they looked fun!

These are very easy to make, and all it takes is pretzels, a bar of chocolate and some sprinkles and you’re good to go!

I broke the chocolate up into chunks and melted in the microwave – I do this in short bursts so as not to burn the chocolate. You can of course do it in a bowl over boiling water, but I’m too lazy for that!

Then it was simply a matter of dipping the pretzel knots and sticks into the bowl of melted chocolate! Easy peasey!

To lift the pretzel knots out of the chocolate I have a handy dandy chocolate dipping tool…

…but you can use the tines of a fork to do exactly the same job!

As I dunked each pretzel I held it over the bowl and let it drip off the excess before placing onto a tray covered with greaseproof paper to set. I could have allowed the chocolate to drip off a little more perhaps…!

The chocolate covered pretzel sticks were then dipped into the sprinkles before also placing on the tray…

They all then went into the fridge to set for about an hour or so.

I then packaged them up into a plastic food bag with some ribbon and gave out as gifts :)

There are a few things I would do differently next time since I just did the obvious when it came to making these chocolate covered pretzels…melt chocolate, dunk pretzels, allow to set, done! I would place the dunked pretzels onto a wire rack to dry (with something underneath to catch the dipping chocolate, only so the pretzels could retain there shape a little better – most were blobs of chocolate (not sure how that is wrong, but hey, if you wanna see the shape of the pretzels!) I would also pour the chocolate into a taller, slim glass to dunk the pretzel sticks into, because it was a bit fiddly in the shallow bowl I decided to use >_< I’d do the same for the sprinkles and dip the chocolate coated sticks into that – or just sprinkle them on top with my fingers.

But, it was all good fun, despite technique, they went down well and didn’t last too long – not through spoilage, through sheer eatability! (Yes, it’s a word!)

No longer will I bother to buy expensive chocolate covered pretzels – like I said, they seem to be hard to buy here in the UK and when I have found them, they cost silly money – I’ll just make them myself – give them a go – they are so simple to do!
