I’ve written before about our love for kitchen gadgets – we have bought lots over the years, either because we think they’ll be useful (juicing machine) or because we think they’ll make tasks easier (hamburger press) or because we think they’re just too fun not to own – like this awesome cocktail layering tool from Rainbow Cocktail™.
With summer well and truly on its way, and with quite a few soirees pencilled into my diary to plan, I know that this gadget is going to make drinks fun to create and serve!
Before unleashing my cocktail layered cocktail making skillz on my friends and family, I had a play with the gadget to see how easy it is to use, especially as it advertised with “create layered cocktails with ease”. I gathered my cocktail making supplies – spirits, syrups and juices; glasses and of course the Rainbow Cocktail™ tool…
Our liquor cabinet is pretty much non existent at the moment – all I had was vodka, rum and whisky…but they would do for my experiments ;) I also had syrups in the form of grenadine, lavender and coconut, as well as different fruit juices – orange, pineapple and cranberry-raspberry.
This contraption below is what will help you to make perfectly layered cocktails with ease.
There is a little instruction leaflet that comes with the Rainbow Cocktail™ which tells you how to use it, gives examples of the types of liquids you use for each layer, as well as a few cocktail ideas. It comes inside a cylindrical box which will keep it safe when stored in the cupboard.
The layering tool sits on top of the glass that you are using, and as you pour each liquid in, the float moves up giving perfect layers of different drinks – I was so impressed!
The first step is pouring the heaviest liquid into the bottom of your glass – this will typically be syrups and thick liqueurs (I’m thinking something like Tia Maria or Baileys Irish Cream), you then put the tool on top of your glass and pour the next layer – juices and sodas, and then the final layer which is the light alcohols.
The bottom layer here is grenadine, then orange juice, and finally, cranberry-raspberry juice. Are you impressed with the layers? I am!!
I then began to experiment with the different liquids; I discovered that coconut syrup is heavier than lavender syrup. I had poured lavender first (through the tool, because I forgot you could do the first layer without) and then decided to pour over the coconut syrup, which sunk through the lavender and settled at the bottom. It was like doing my own, awesome grown up science experiments!

After pouring various juices and spirits and syrups, I ended up with four different layered cocktails – which you are advised to stir before drinking – all looking very funky and cool, and makes me want to buy all the different coloured syrups there are in the world!! The instruction leaflet suggests colouring clear liquids with food colouring – what a fab idea! They also say you can also use it to make floater coffees – you know, the ones with booze at the bottom and cream floating on top! Having made hundreds of these when I used to work behind a bar in my youth, I don’t need a gadget to do that though *rasp*
Don’t think that you’re limited to making just alcoholic cocktails – you can make non-alcoholic cocktails too – just experiment with the liquid densities of juices and syrups to see what works! Actually with the juices, it would be a fun thing to get the children involved with too – I told you this is science!
