I want to visit all of England’s counties, and in between, we’ve taken to making more of the weekends, by visiting places of interest in our home county of Essex as well as neighbouring counties.

The past few weekends, we’ve been going for drives out into Essex, and we have stopped at several churches along the way. One of them was St. Michael and All Angels in Galleywood. You can read about the history of the church on its website.

When we visited there was lots going on in the church – perhaps a party or a club – lots of kiddies running around!

Steve noticed this monument in the church grounds, which is a boundary stone – not something we’ve seen before. It amazes me how much history is around us without us even realising.

I’ve got a bit of a fascination with old graveyards; there is something amazing, yet sad about them. The thought that these graves marked loved ones, that were probably visited and tended with care, are now but relics. With decades, and even hundreds of years now passing, it’s likely no one visits them anymore. This church had some old gravestones, and some newer ones too.

This one, from 1939, looks to me like it may have been added more recently – I found it so sad that this couple had lost their child, and went on with their lives till their eventual deaths in old age. Their stone is so weathered, yet the child’s stone is so white and pure.
