This Halloween World Vision would like you to help them turn a night of fear in to a night of hope. Carve a heart in your pumpkin and then text HEART to 70060 to donate £5* to World Vision and help children living in fear.
I joined in with this last year, and whilst I can’t carve a heart into a pumpkin this year, I will still be donating. You see, tonight, going to be with my precious son, enjoying a night celebrating Halloween, knowing that he has freedom, human rights, healthcare, a home, a family that love him, food, water, and all the things that a child deserves to have.
World Vision [www.worldvision.org.uk], a Christian organisation, is the largest international children’s charity. World Vision teams are working in the world’s hardest places, with continued presence in almost 100 countries. Their projects teach children and adults about child rights, help them access education and skills training, enable parents to earn a more stable income for the family, provide shelter for children fleeing conflict, help children come to terms with past trauma, and help kids towards a childhood free from fear.
- 1.2 billion people live in fragile contexts and are especially vulnerable to crises and conflicts
- In 2014 a staggering 102 million people were caught up in humanitarian crises
- 47 million 15-17 year olds are involved in hazardous work and child labour
- Nearly 1 in 4 girls aged 15-19 are forced to marry
- In 2014 World Vision UK helped 51,566 children through direct child protection
- Almost all WV projects include child protection work
- In 2014 World Vision trained almost 200,000 young people to better protect themselves and others (198,222 young people)
This Halloween – and every night – millions of children face a night of fear. It isn’t fun or exciting and it isn’t a choice for one night. 31 October is simply another night of facing hardship, loneliness, abuse, hunger or conflict.
World Vision is in the world’s hardest places tonight and every night. Right now, they are comforting children as they wake from nightmares of abuse, helping girls and boys forced into marriage or hard labour and protecting children fleeing bombs and disasters.
By carving a heart in your pumpkin and texting HEART to 70060 to donate £5* you will be showing you care and help us to bring hope to even more children.
How to Carve Your Pumpkin
1. Cut around the stalk
Choose a large pumpkin and use a sharp serrated knife to cut off the crown. Measure a circle about two inches (5cm) radius from the stem, and angle your knife to the centre of the stem when cutting to make sure your lid doesn’t drop into the centre once you’ve hollowed it out.
2. Remove the contents
Scoop out the filling and scrape the sides as clean as you can so that as much light will shine through it as possible. Set aside your filling. You can use the flesh to make Grandma’s Pumpkin Soup, or try out one of my other pumpkin recipes if you like.
3. Carve the heart
Using a marker pen, draw the outline of your heart onto the pumpkin. Then use a small sharp serrated knife to cut out your heart (always cut away from you in case the knife slips).
4. Finishing touches
Finally, pop a tea light inside the pumpkin and light it. Share a picture on social media, and don’t forget to tag @WorldVisionUK #carveaheart. Then place your pumpkin in your window to share this night of hope with your family, friends and neighbours.
