What Are Mocktails? Non Alcoholic Cocktails

What Are Mocktails?

If you have ever asked yourself “What is a mocktail?” then wonder no more.

A mocktail is simply a non-alcoholic cocktail…

Mocktails, an abbreviation for “mock cocktails”, are festive, non-alcoholic party drinks. The word “mock” implies a facade of the alcoholic cocktail without any of the alcoholic content.

In the last few years, it has become so popular that it even finds its place on the cocktail menu in many restaurants and bars.

Mocktails can be described as a smooth blend of only non-alcoholic drinks, which could be fresh fruit juices, syrups, cream, herbs, and spices.

Mocktails are designed specifically for those who do not take alcoholic drinks or need to refrain from them, which means these blends can be enjoyed by people of all ages.

What Is A Virgin Cocktail?

You may have heard the term virgin cocktail, and that is simply the term used before the word mocktail was invented.

One of the most famous virgin cocktails is the Shirley Temple which is made with ginger ale, a splash of grenadine syrup, and garnished with a maraschino cherry.

It was allegedly made for and named after the famous child actress, but Shirley Temple debunked that theory in the mid-1980s in an interview saying:

“The saccharine sweet, icky drink? Yes, well… those were created in the probably middle 1930s by the Brown Derby Restaurant in Hollywood and I had nothing to do with it. But, all over the world, I am served that. People think it’s funny. I hate them. Too sweet!”

More modern versions of the Shirley Temple also contain lemon-lime soda or lemonade.

Whether you call these booze-free beverages, mocktails, virgin cocktails, fake cocktails, or cocktail drink without alcohol, they are delicious drinks that anyone can enjoy!

Making Mocktails

I attended a Mocktail Masterclass in London several years ago as part of a Dry January event.

We had a great night learning how to make some delicious non-alcoholic cocktails using BRITA filtered water with other fruity, herby, spicy ingredients,

Now, one of the reasons people drink alcohol is taste. Many people love the taste of great wine or a delicious cocktail, but may not realise there are SO many amazing non-alcoholic cocktails and drinks that can be enjoyed on their own or to complement a meal.

As part of the masterclass, we made these party mocktails:

  • Elderflower Julepa mocktail version of the classic Mint Julep
  • Lavender Souruses lavender syrup and tastes delicious!
  • Pink Champagnea great non-alcoholic punch recipe to serve at a party
  • Thai Tumblea mocktail of my own invention!

And if you are a member of The Pumpkin Patch you can get free printable recipe cards for the above mocktails plus two bonus mocktail recipes for Hot Toddy and St. Clements.

Don’t be afraid of making mocktails because they are really quite easy to make. If you have a cocktail shaker and other equipment – fab! But if you haven’t, don’t worry, most mocktail drinks can be made just as easily without!

Cocktails & Mocktails

I have got a lot of cocktails on The Purple Pumpkin Blog and with pretty much every single one of them I have included a virgin cocktail recipe – aimed more at adults, and mocktail versions for kids.

Here is a list of the cocktails that I’ve included non-alcoholic versions of until I can create standalone posts for them!

You’ll find the mocktail recipes for the cocktails at the end of the post.

Many virgin cocktails use flavored syrups as an ingredient. I love the Monin brand of syrups as there are lots of flavours and they are a very versatile ingredient that can be used in cocktails, mocktails, coffee, cocoa, shakes, smoothies, and more.

Tips For Setting Up A Mocktail Bar

When serving drinks I like to set up a bar area.

I set up a fruity cocktail bar for my sister’s Cocktails & Dreams Hen Party back in 2012 where you’ll also find the quick virgin/no alcohol versions of some classic cocktails.

The virgin cocktails include:

  • Piña Colada
  • Fuzzy Navel
  • Mai Tai
  • Cherry Bing
  • Sex on the Beach
  • Bellini
  • Summer Sunset

Here are my tips for setting up a mocktail bar at home:

  • If you have only a few guests,  you could think about using a drinks trolley. They’re making a big comeback! (And I want one!)
  • If you have a large number of guests, then turn a table, countertop, or even a large alcove/bay window ledge into a bar.
  • Make sure whatever you use as a bar is sturdy and secure, (so no wallpaper pasting tables!) and can fit everything on it.
  • If you haven’t got a cocktail shaker – don’t worry – use a jar with a lid – like a Mason or Kilner jar, or an old jam jar (empty, washed, and dried of course!).
  • You don’t really need a fancy muddler – the end of a small rolling pin will do the job just fine.
  • If you’re worried about breakages, consider plastic cocktail glasses instead.
  • If you don’t like using plastic, what about some great copper cocktail glasses, after all, you can make a virgin Moscow Mule! And the copper keeps the drinks colder for longer.
  • Prep the fruit and other garnish in advance. Use a clean chopping board and knife, and not one you’ve been using to cut onions!
  • Have plenty of ice – both cubed and crushed. Don’t forget the ice buckets!
  • You could also make some fun ice shapes using a variety of ice cube molds. There are spheres, squares, and even funky shapes for themed parties.
  • Because we use so much ice at home, and can’t have a fridge with an ice maker inside, we invested in a small ice machine that can sit on the countertop. It saves us so much money on ice!
  • Corralling items in trays helps keep everything organised – place all syrups on one tray, juices on another, garnishes on another, bottles of water on a fourth – you get the idea!
  • Provide cocktail supplies like napkins, stirrers, picks, and straws.
  • If you want to go really kitsch don’t forget cocktail umbrellas and flamingo picks!
  • Have a cloth nearby for mopping up any spillages.
