My God Daughter’s Baptism
Home » Family »On 6th April 2013 my niece Sephy was baptised. I was her God Mother and between her mum (my sister), my other sister and myself we organised the day which was a lovely celebration for Sephy’s special day.
I took the photographs on the day so that Sephy will have something to look back to when she is old enough to understand. I have barely any photos of my son’s baptism, and that makes me sad…here are some of the photos of her big day, and I hope that they might give you some ideas if you ever have to plan an event such as a baptism or christening.
All events start with an invitation, which I designed for my sister to send out to her guests. I then carried through the same design style throughout the various elements on the day.
My two sisters, brothers-in-law, my husband, my son and myself all helped to set everything up on the morning of the baptism. They had hired the hall next door to the church to hold the reception afterwards, and we were limited on how much we could decorate, but that didn’t stop us decorating what we could!
My sisters were in charge of setting up the tables and used plastic tablecloths to cover each table, with a centerpiece in the middle of each one. Bowls were filled with clear and pink water pearls and had a photo stand in the center of each one with photos of Sephy attached. Since it was springtime, a few fuzzy chicks also sat in the bowls! And for a little bit of fun, pots of bubbles!
I made Sephy’s Baptism cake and cupcakes and I also designed and printed off a banner to hang above the cake display.
As a keepsake gift, I made some subway art with her name and baptism date. I placed it in an ornate black frame and it sat near the cakes on the day. It now sits on my sister’s window ledge along with the one I made for when Sephy was born.
When it came to thank you favours, my sister thought a personalised fridge magnet would be nice, and we (my other sister and I!) agreed. Maria came up with the poem for our niece, I came up with the design, and Jo (Sephy’s mum) put everything together – a great collaborative effort! Everyone commented how lovely they were and I agree!
Another favour for a bit of fun were lollipops – great for the kids and the big kids too! I gave these out at Jo’s Baby Shower last summer, and that’s where she got the idea from to do them for Sephy’s baptism. I designed a tag to attach and job done!
My sister bought a guest book so that when Sephy grows up she can read all the messages from her friends and family, which I thought was a lovely idea. Maria again put her poetry skills in motion and wrote a cute rhyme which I then took and turned into a sign to sit next to the guest book.
Sephy had a pretty white dress to wear for her baptism, and she used the same white shawl that I used for my son’s baptism in 1999 – love now having that family heirloom.
I bought her a silver bracelet to wear. We all have on from our baptisms, so another nice family tradition.

By the later afternoon, Sephy was getting tired and grumpy so we changed her out of her dress and into a comfy babygro instead. Sadly I didn’t get a picture of me on my own with her in her baptism outfit, but one of the pitfalls of being behind the lens!
All in all it was a lovely, lovely day. Sephy, other than a few tears when the water was poured over her head was so well behaved, and even with all the people around she was a little happy girly! She got tired towards the end of the day and went home with her daddy to have a nap, and everyone commented what a wonderful celebration we all put on, which means all the hard work was worth it!
