Day 31 – Cook, Craft, Create: December 2012

It’s the final day of Cook, Craft, Create: December: 2012, it’s been a journey let me tell you! I’ve been so crazy busy and some days I just didn’t think I would get things done!

For today, I was going to do something else, but I just ran out of time, what with all the other things I’d left to the last minute, so instead I’m going to show you how to paint with light!

This was one of the photos that I took for my Project 366 that didn’t make the cut, but it shows you so well how you can paint with light in a photograph.

All you need is a light source – a sparkler, a torch, a mobile[cell] phone and a long exposure setting on your camera. My camera has a night time mode where you can set it to expose over 15, 30 or 60 seconds. I set it to 15 seconds, pressed the shutter and my husband painted with light.

To make this picture, I covered the screen of his mobile phone with black card and had cut a star – about 2cm wide in it – you an just see the star at the end of the light trails – cool, right?!

We painted in reverse so that it would come out the right way around, but you could always just flip the image in an editing programme when you are done.

We tried with the flash on his phone – but that let out waaay too much light…as you can see!

We also tried with a smaller cut out…and that didn’t let enough light through…

We’ve done this in the past with sparklers – a lot of fun! Try it out sometime!
