Hen Parties in the UK (and probably the world over!) are usually alcohol fuelled nights out, but with a couple of pregnant hens at my sister’s Cocktails & Dreams Hen Party it was decided to keep this party dry. I’m not a big drinker so it didn’t really bother me, and everyone understood – it didn’t seem fair that some of us would be drinking alcohol whilst others couldn’t. But, a dry hen night did not make for a boring one!

Knowing that the party was to have a Hawaiian/Tropical theme, I thought “why not fruity cocktails?!” and made up a menu of classic cocktails – without the alcohol! I designed a menu list with the recipes for each cocktail, using the hot tropical colour palette I’d picked out for this party and the same fonts as the invitations.

Here are the cocktails we could make at the party…

Pina Colada – 1 part pineapple juice, 1 part coconut milk
Fuzzy Navel – 1 part orange juice, 1 part peach nectar
Mai Tai – 1 part pineapple juice, 1 part cranberry juice, squeeze of lime
Cherry Bing – 1 part cherry juice, 1 part orange juice, top up with water
Sex on the Beach – 1 part cranberry juice, 1 part pineapple juice, 1 part peach nectar
Belini – 1 part peach nectar, topped up with apple fizz
Summer Sunset – 1 part orange juice, top up with lemonade (fizzy), splash of grenadine

I set up a cocktail bar in one corner of my kitchen with the menu (that I printed and placed into a picture frame), all the various juices and other ingredients we would need to make the cocktails up. I also provided a quarter cup so that we could all measure out the parts. Remember, when a cocktail recipe calls for parts of an ingredient – the part can be any size! You could make a big jug of a cocktail, and your part could be a pint.

I bought some cheapy plastic martini glasses because I thought they’d be fun – and because I couldn’t find any plastic cocktail glasses anywhere! So something was better than nothing! I set them up with cocktail umbrellas and straws, along with an ice bucket full of crushed ice and a cocktail shaker.

I had some cocktail accessories in the form of swizzle sticks and stirrers. This photo doesn’t show the x-rated straws and stirrers I also had ;) I set up a vase full of citrus fruit if needed for cocktails.

Cracked up the coconut – for decoration more than anything else! So pretty!

I’ve got some nice large wine glasses that I decorated with a piece of ribbon tied to the stem of the glass – a different colour for each hen! That way we wouldn’t mix up our glasses – genius! Mine was, of course, purple :D

I bought some fun fruity straws which had tissue paper fruit wrapped around them – went well with the fruity theme of this cocktail bar!

With the cocktail bar all set up, it was cocktail making time! My sister self-appointed herself as mixologist and started making cocktails for everyone!

The cocktail bar was a real hit! And I can honestly say that we didn’t miss the alcohol content at all. Us girlies know we can have a lot of fun without being off our faces!
